Happy International friendship day. Friendships are such a special thing, good ones can raise you up and support without judgement or expectation. Whenever I've had a tough time (and there have been a few) there was always a friend who made it their job to help me navigate it and I couldnt have managed without them. At Home-Start in Suffolk friendships are one of the main things that #families we support, tell us they don't have. Our amazing volunteers provide that missing friendship and make a real difference to parents and children who are going through a period of stress. Kind, supportive, encouraging words; acknowledgement; empowerment; practical support, are all things that families tell us helps them. #volunteering is flexible, it doesn't have to be during office hours and there is full training and support. And just giving a few hours of your time can mean someone gains a friend. yet2 had a great time volunteering at More Than Words. We sorted through more than 1,400 books, working alongside the young adult coordinators who work at More Than Words “to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business.” More Than Words works with some of the most vulnerable young adults in Greater Boston: those who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school. At More Than Words the young adults have a paying job that teaches them job skills, interpersonal skills, etc. while receiving focused support to ensure they persist in school and create plans for their future. #givingback #volunteering
