A Timely Reminder from a Billionaire
This weekend I had the privilege of attending a special event with one of the wealthiest black billionaires in the world, David Steward who is the founder and chairman of World Wide Technology.
In short, he is amazing! I don't say this simply because of what he has accomplished. I was most impressed by his convictions and display of character. While there were a number of gems that I stored away, one of the things that stood out most was the takeaway from a story that he recounted. During a particularly difficult time in business, he was working and praying that he could weather the storm and come out with his business in tact. One of his lowest moments was when he noticed that his car was being towed from his office.
It didn't take much to place myself in that scene and imagine how he felt. Actually, I know what it is to have the bottom fall out. So, I got it. And, it's against this backdrop that I'll share what that simple story reminded me of.
The Lesson:
Setbacks are a part of business and every area of life. The pain and discomfort that most of us shrink away from is the very thing required to usher us to our destinations.
Rather than allowing the fear of failure to stop us, we need to kick fear in the face, push forward and lean into setbacks, embracing them as an inevitable part of the journey. Not only this, we should never waste a good storm, for character and strength is forged during times of adversity, not when the sailing is smooth.
As it turns out, David Steward made it well beyond that setback and many others. According to Forbes, he is worth almost $8 Billion Dollars. And, we can make it too.
Here is a question I like to ponder that may be helpful for you. What am I running from that is jeopardizing my dream and the impact I want to have in the world?
Please share this with someone who needs to be encouraged.
