Lake Charles Methanol (LCM) plans to invest $3.24 billion in a blue hydrogen project with carbon capture and storage (CCS) in Louisiana. The industrial facility will use advanced auto thermal gas forming technology and CCS to produce low-carbon hydrogen, aiming to generate 3.6 million tonnes of methanol annually. Collaborating with a third party, LCM intends to capture and sequester about one million tonnes of carbon yearly to reduce hydrogen's carbon intensity, producing low-carbon intensity methanol. The final investment decision is expected later in the year, with construction beginning and commercial operations targeted for late 2027, providing economic and environmental benefits.

Lake Charles Methanol II LLC (LCM) announced plans to invest $3.24 billion to construct a manufacturing plant producing low-carbon intensity methanol and other chemicals at the Port of Lake Charles. The proposed facility would reform natural gas and renewable gas feedstocks into hydrogen while capturing carbon dioxide, which would then produce about 3.6 million tons of methanol per year. Lake Charles Methanol plans to work with a third party to capture and sequester about 1 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, reducing the hydrogen's carbon intensity for synthesis into low-carbon intensity methanol. The project is currently undergoing a FEED study and regulatory permitting. A final investment decision and the start of construction are expected in mid-2024.  Construction and commissioning of the facility are expected to take about three-and-a-half years, which would allow commercial operations to begin in late 2027.

Venn Brown sat down with Glenn Corrie, CEO of Hazer Group Limited, to discuss the progress of the commercialisation demonstration plant, customers, lower estimated levelized cost of hydrogen, revenue outlook and key milestones. Commercialisation Demonstration Plant (CDP): Hazer has just announced that its CDP has completed a continuous 240-hour stable operating campaign, a 30% step up from the 182-hour operation completed in May. The plant is operating as designed with almost 98% uptime, and only a few minor issues arising from peripheral systems. Results from the CDP continue to allow Hazer to refine its modelling, with the group confirming the process requires significantly lower energy than expected: 8-10kWh rather than 10-13kWh per kilogram of hydrogen. Management expects to declare commercial readiness by the end of 2024. Reduction in Levelised Cost of Hydrogen: Process optimisations, improved energy efficiency, higher graphite price expectations and lower operating expenditure have lowered Hazer’s expected LCOH expectations. Revenue outlook: The 240-hour operation unlocks the next round of ARENA funding, with cash expected in January 2025. Hazer Group Limited announced today their first commercial greener than green hydrogen and graphite production plant. Some people might think why I would applaud for this great development of Luc Kox and his team because I was working on another methane pyrolysis technology. Well, I think it is great because I believe in methane pyrolysis, not only to convert bio-methane but also to produce greener than green hydrogen in high volumes using natural gas or refinery gas. At TNO the objective of my team was first to get methane pyrolysis in the market (even if it would be by others like the developments at Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), SINTEF, C-Zero or Hazer first) and afterwards the somewhat more complicated (but with additional advantages) Ember methane pyrolysis technology. As a fund manager we are always on the lookout to support companies that are actively solving our biggest challenges whilst providing the potential for a good return. Recently James Baird who is on our investment committee visited Hazer Group Limited in Western Australia for a site tour and briefing. We'd like to extend our thanks to the team at Hazer Group for facilitating this visit and highlight the great work they are doing to help mitigate #GHG emissions in the Hydrogen sector. Currently the majority of Hydrogen (over 90%) is produced via a process called steam methane reforming which is fueled by Coal to create Ammonia and used in the oil refining process. The methane pyrolysis technology that Hazer group utilizes can greatly reduce emissions and provide an effective way of storing carbon in the form of graphite or even reusing or repurposing the carbon (graphite) in other industries. When using Biomethane as the feedstock, as is the case at this site then the emissions can effectively be negative.
