There are a lot of organizations that have a nonexistent training budget and that makes it easy for people to claim they can't be developed. Maybe in the 1900s...but now? I don't think so! Yeah...I went there. Because it's true. We have more resources today than we ever had so if you aren't being developed, it's because you want someone to find the resources for you. I'm here to tell you that's a HUGE mistake. How is someone else supposed to know what training method or presenter engages you the most? It's impossible. And the thought that one person could be an expert in all things related to a topic is a complete fallacy. Take a moment and thing about what you need to learn to make the uncomfortable areas of your job more comfortable and what you're interested in learning. You should be developing yourself in both these areas throughout the year. Once you pinpoint what you want to develop yourself in, consider how you like to learn. Not how you think the information is available, but how you like to receive it. Maybe you go running every morning and start out listening to music but tune into a podcast mid-run. Bingo! A podcast might be your method of learning without having to add one more thing into your day! Or maybe you like the entertainment of social media, such as TikTok, Instagram or Facebook. I have tons of great resources in my feeds. If you get a 15 minute break, put in your airpods and "doom scroll" some development! What I'm saying is that it doesn't have to be in a book, a lecture hall or a computerized learning program to be considered development. We've evolved people! Have fun. Get creative. Exiting from my Tech company as a Founder and CEO, and starting a new career as a CEO Coach, it was overwhelming. Where do I start? I had a desire to start writing online. ↳ I took a course on Digital Writing by Dickie Bush 🚢 and Nicolas Cole 🚢🏴☠️ by Ship 30 for 30. They encouraged me to write in public (and not in isolation from my blog). LinkedIn is where I felt most comfortable, ↳ I took the LinkedIn OS course by Justin Welsh. Building businesses is all I know. I wanted to help/support entrepreneurs achieve their dreams. ↳ So, I went through a formal Coach training program from Phrenimos School of Transformation, accredited by the International Coaching Federation I knew this was the time to invest. ↳ So, I did. I invested in myself. Systematically. It took time to integrate all the learning, to make it my own. I am still a work in progress. How to build confidence and start being seen as an expert in your content It's easy to feel overwhelmed when surrounded by industry experts; but waiting until you feel "ready" can impact your progress and stop you from showing up. So here are 5 quick tips to help you feel confident & start being seen as an expert Share your experiences People connect with stories, and your journey can inspire and resonate with your audience. Authenticity builds trust and credibility, making you more relatable and trustworthy in the eyes of your future clients. Rather than worrying about what others might say or think about you, focus on sharing your authentic experiences. This could be in voice overs, talking to camera or even in the text of a beautiful behind the scenes video. Share your speciality Don't underestimate the impact of sharing your expertise. If you have a solution to a problem, it's a disservice to others not to share it. The act of sharing not only helps others; it also reinforces your own understanding and confidence in your expertise. If no one knows about your skills, they don’t know you could help them. Consume more books and podcasts Expand beyond traditional business books. While they offer valuable insights, exploring a variety of genres can broaden your perspective and enhance your creativity. Then you have something interesting to talk about in your content, making you different by sharing different ideas and concepts. Invest in learning & growth This is a direct investment in your confidence and expertise. Things like workshops, coaching & mentorships, courses and masterclass that help you stay ahead of everyone in your industry. I am always investing in experts, coaches and networking with people who help me learn and master my skills. Do things imperfectly If you wait for the right time to feel fully prepared, you may miss important opportunities. Instead, take action imperfectly. The first step is always the hardest and uncomfortable, but what it does is allows you to learn, grow, adapt and improve.. Building confidence along the way. Mistakes are essential lessons in innovation Building confidence and expertise is an ongoing process that requires a proactive mindset and a commitment to growth. And sometimes it can be a lonely journey without the right guidance. I am hearing from many organizations who are investing significant $ in providing content libraries for their organization with the hope that employees will self develop and develop the skills they need to move the organization forward. Two challenges with this thinking...... 1- Hope is not a strategy. 2- Content libraries don't drive behavior change. There is a place for content libraries. They are really good at Level 1 of the pyramid for providing knowledge transfer and can even do fairly well at Level 2 when it comes to building basics skills & capabilities. They don't drive behavior change.. If you want behavior change at scale across the organization you need to work at Levels 3-5 of the pyramid. Learning should be strategic and aligned to key organizational results. I always like to ask my clients two questions: 1- What is the job to be done? What result are you trying to achieve? 2- How will you measure success and what is it worth to the organization? Often times prospective clients will ask, help us decide between LinkedIn Learning or FranklinCovey. That is the wrong question. What they should be asking is how does LinkedIn Learning and FranklinCovey synergistically work together to drive results. The two together allow organizations to work at all levels of the pyramid. In my humble opinion when it comes to content libraries, LinkedIn is the best in the industry. How are they different? I like to use the analogy of coaching a basketball team. My players need to learn the rules of the game. They need to learn the various positions and where they play on the court. They need to learn the basics like dribbling, passing, and shooting foul shots. Critical skills to be successful as a team however it wont teach you how to win the game. How to change up the play when you are down by 6 with 2 minutes left in the game. FranklinCovey teaches the team how to win games and ultimately win championships. FranklinCovey is focused on executing the game plan in real time leveraging the strengths of everyone on the team and changing behavior. Are you ready to up your game? If so, let's chat.
