It's World Book Day (in case you hadn't already seen a hundred posts on the topic!) and we love sharing a good book with children and young people, here at Guy's Gift. Some of our favourites at the moment: ·      The Hare Shaped Hole by John Dougherty ·      Let’s Talk About When Someone Dies by Molly Potter ·      Sometimes Life Sucks (when someone important dies) by Molly Carlile Sharing a book helps children and young people to navigate their grief in a safe way, and helps adults around them (teachers, parents, group leaders,…) to open up conversations about feelings and emotions. There are LOADS more wonderful books out there that help children and young people understand their grief. Also - did you know that we provide free of charge bereavement resource packs for Coventry and Warwickshire schools? These packs come with a variety of books that we know help children navigate the topic of death and dying, along with information and activity packs for schools and families. Resources for widows and others that are grieving can vary widely depending on the specific needs, location, and circumstances of each individual. However, there are several categories of resources that can provide substantial support. The National Alliance for Children's Grief (NACG) has recently released a public service announcement to raise awareness about children's grief, highlighting it as a critical public health issue. Recent data from our Children's Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM) report reveals an increase in the number of bereaved children since 2020. This data not only highlights the growing prevalence of grief among young individuals but also validates the need for enhanced community support systems.  By raising awareness and advocating for these essential services, we can ensure that every child who experiences a loss receives the care and support they need to heal and thrive, bringing us closer to our vision that no child should be alone in their grief. read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eWsAD-nK

In honor of #ChildrensGriefAwarenessMonth, we’d like to share some relevant data pertaining to childhood bereavement on the Cape & Islands. The Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model (CBEM) is a tool developed by Judi's House/JAG Institute, in partnership with the New York Life Foundation, that approximates rates of U.S. children and youth who will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the time they reach adulthood. Sharing Kindness recently tasked Judi’s House/JAG with providing bereavement rates specific to our local counties. According to the 2023 CBEM, 1 in 12 children in the US will experience the death of a sibling or parent by age 18. In Massachusetts, that number is 1 in 13. In Barnstable County, it drops to 1 in 9 (for children on Dukes and Nantucket Counties, the estimation is 1 in 15 and 1 in 24, respectfully). 1 in 9 children who will be bereaved due to the death of a parent or sibling. We know that bereaved children are more likely to die from suicide, more likely to experience substance abuse, and less likely to complete high school or enter higher education. We know that providing a safe space for children to share their feelings, talk about their grief and receive support from others who understand loss can help. These are the benefits of peer grief support. If you are a parent or guardian and your family is navigating a death loss, we welcome you to join our free Family Grief Groups. We meet together, share a meal, and then break out into peer support groups: one for parents/guardians, and separate groups for children of different developmental ages. So happy to hear this just in time for my talk next Tuesday on National Grief and Bereavement Day. Canada can be a global leader in the intentional design of a holistic approach to grief and loss. The bereaved, including the over 875,000 bereaved children, need a coordinated, pan Canadian strategy to ensure that all of us understand how to better companion self and others when life goes sideways.
