Northrop Grumman Corporation successfully completed tests of several crucial elements of the Sentinel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), marking significant progress for the program in its engineering, manufacturing and development phase. Forward and aft sections of a Sentinel ICBM missile were evaluated through a rigorous test campaign at the company’s Strategic Missile Test and Production Complex in Promontory, Utah. The tests lower risk for the program with important data about the missile’s inflight structural dynamics. Data from the tests help engineering teams mature models, lower risk and ensure flight success. The shroud fly-off and missile modal tests were part of the company’s engineering, manufacturing, and development (EMD), or design, contract for Sentinel. Northrop Grumman is closely partnered with the Air Force as the EMD phase progresses and key milestones are achieved.The Sentinel program is a modernization of the nation’s ground-based leg of the strategic triad and is planned to be viable through 2075. GE Aerospace Completes Next Series of Testing to Optimize Adaptive Engine for Future Combat Fighters GE Aerospace announced that it has completed the next series of testing on its XA100 adaptive cycle engine to gather additional data and advance this next-generation technology for future combat aircraft. Adaptive cycle engines are critical to ensure U.S. combat aircraft maintain their superiority by providing 30 percent greater range and significantly more thermal management compared to today’s most advanced combat engine. “With the information gathered through our fourth round of testing, the future of military aviation is no longer theoretical – it is a reality,” said Amy Gowder, president and CEO, GE Aerospace Defense and Systems. “Every additional terabyte of data we gather off this real-world engine puts GE Aerospace and our military in a better position to deliver cutting-edge aviation capabilities to the warfighter.” The testing of the engine provides further understanding of critical components that can be used to improve the design and manufacturing approaches for future production of adaptive cycle engines. A scientist at the Naval Postgraduate School has created a promisng new solution for fuel-efficient aviation. The invention, a solid-state circuit breaker (SSCB) for hybrid electric aircraft propulsion systems, is now available for licensing and commercial development. Where SSCBs typically use a current limiting inductor to control the flow of electricity, the Navy invention is the first to eliminate this need using an insulated gate bipolar transistor device. This makes the circuit breaker lighter and more efficient, driving fuel efficiency and extending the aircraft's range. Its up to the US Congress at this point; The jist of this decision and the 9 advantages being touted is based on:: - current Pratt engine doesnt have “growth” potential to keep up with existing airframe and systems changes, never mind future planned changes. Updating the current engine for US$2 billion is a “bandaid”. - GE has an adaptive engine ready to go into field testing. Its designed to be a drop in. -Pratt has an adaptive engine not yet ready to field test in development. - A adaptive engine competition betwen Pratt and GE should be run to the point of a full field test for both adaptive engine resulting in a better new engine for less money. -Cost to field test both adaptive engines is estimated to be US $6 billion.
