Did you know that Boca Raton, FL, is known for having a strict development code that prohibits any advertisements or billboards from being erected within the city limits? Yet, the biggest spenders in advertising, the CPG companies, gather in this city every February for the Consumer Analysts Group of New York (CAGNY) conference, with their CEOs sharing their strategies. Sameer Mansukhani and I have decided to be part of the gathering this year. Our goal? To learn directly from their CEOs how CPGs plan to satisfy their consumers, customers, and investors in 2024. For most of 2022 to 2023, their playbook to beat the 5 i’s (inflation, infection, invasion, inventories, and interest rates) was primarily through price-taking tactics. With that approach, they risk 1. Losing their consumers, who are shifting their loyalties to competitor products 2. Angering the retailer customers (e.g., a recent decision by Carrefour to delist PepsiCo products over “unacceptable” price hikes); and 3. Worrying the Investors due to QOQ volume declines that come with the economics of price increase That gives me a reason to bet that this year's CAGNY theme will be about steering away from price increases at the expense of volume declines to instead driving volume and profitability growth That brings me to my prediction for the 2024 CAGNY themes. I expect the CEOs to talk about prioritizing 1. Volume growth: Better demand creation (through precision marketing), better product portfolio (through purposeful M&As), and better sales tactics (RGM, retail execution) 2. Profitability growth: Profitable product mix (SKU rationalization), profitable sourcing (commodity price hedging), and profitable execution (smarter supply chain management) Stay tuned for updates from the conference next week! Never advertise like Coca-Cola Last week, I spoke to a lady who was trying to get clients for her career coaching services. I asked her: “What are you currently doing.” Her response: “Just copying the best marketers in the world like Coca Cola by running ads” I told her this was the worst thing she could do. The goals of Coca Cola are completely different than a coach like me or you. Their focus is on brand building. They already have distribution worldwide. Oppositely, We are looking to get new clients to purchase from us. The way we do marketing must me much more direct and calculated. 1.⁠ ⁠Build an emotional connection with your audience 2.⁠ ⁠Make offers  3.⁠ ⁠Close deals ^ Most 6-7 figure coaches I know on LinkedIn are doing exactly just that.

MAKE EVERY MOMENT MATTER. Five years ago, I moved to Cincinnati to work for Kroger Precision Marketing. After 20 years in agency media planning, I had become skeptical about the claims of media companies. So, WHY did I want to go work for a media company – and at a retailer (of all places)? 🛒 Because consumer trust is paramount to retailers. We’re here to build long-term relationships through our media experiences. 🛒 Because success is measured in real sales. Keep your fishy metrics in traditional media. Retailers want to reach real households and move incremental units. 🛒 Because new technology is embraced by retailers. Some legacy media companies won’t let go of old systems (e.g third-party cookies). But retailers are investing in the tech and people which make advertising better. The only downside: the people here are terrible. Always collaborating, inspiring, encouraging, and making me into a better person. Last week, we hosted David Turo, Beam Suntory’s CCO. First stop, Wisconsin. The objective was simple: immersion in the market dynamics and premiumization trends. While keeping a growth mindset, we set out to find: -Strategic Consistency: Are our programs aligned to brand goals and expectations? -Identifying Issues: Are there discrepancies with execution account-to-account? If so, why? -Performance optimization: What could we improve, adjust or enhance to increase performance? We met with our distributor partners, we actively listened to buyers, we saw consumer activations and we had a lot of fun along the way! Overall, our Team Wisconsin (led by Kim Hanson ) is top notch!
