Canada is an ideal country to host carbon removal projects and could reap $143 billion in economic activity from the sector by 2050, according to a report by Carbon Removal Canada. The Toronto-based think tank says the country can lead on the climate solution while creating 332,000 jobs — primarily in Western Canada — by mid-century, according to one scenario in the report. “I think what’s lost in carbon removal is that it’s a solution that’s not a silver bullet against a toolbox of solutions, but ultimately, it’s optimistic. Some interesting thoughts, in the attached article, regarding the trajectory of carbon reduction efforts in Canada and what might be possible outcomes for 2030 and 2050. Many companies have undertaken and implemented the early low cost 'wins', such as reductions for the 'easy' Scope 1 reductions like the reduction of fossil fuel consumption. However, the next steps to net-zero become incrementally steeper, requiring more investment and that's perhaps where the efforts will stall. Doesn't help, either, that Poilievre is speaking to rolling back carbon reduction programs that Canada has introduced. Electricity reaches near zero by the mid-2030s in our latest modelling - whether aiming for 1.5C or well-below 2C. Every living person today has in one way or another experienced the harsh effects of climate change brought about by the abuse and neglect of our environment. 🌍 Exciting Developments in Climate Action: Cross-Border CO2 Storage, Carbon Markets, and Carbon Removal Initiatives 🌱 1️⃣ Cross-Border CO2 Storage Agreements: Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Sweden have joined forces to establish cross-border arrangements for transporting and storing captured CO2 in Norwegian storage sites. These agreements are a significant step towards creating a well-functioning carbon capture and storage (CCS) market in the North Sea region. By working together, these countries aim to contribute to EU climate goals while boosting economic development. 2️⃣ Chile's Carbon Market Progress: Chile's carbon market is making strides with four Verra-certified projects leading the way, reducing nearly 260,000 tCO₂e emissions. Verra is committed to supporting Chile and other nations in their climate efforts through capacity-building initiatives and technical assistance. The upcoming Chile Carbon Forum, under Verra's Verified Carbon Standard, will further facilitate stakeholder collaboration and project development. 3️⃣ Canada Embraces Carbon Removal: In a forward-looking move, the Government of Canada has expanded its Low-Carbon Fuel Procurement Program to include the procurement of carbon removal services. This demonstrates Canada's commitment to accelerating the carbon removal market and achieving net-zero fleet emissions by 2050. Similar initiatives by the U.S. DOE and IEA align with Canada's goals, opening up opportunities for leadership in the carbon removal sector and encouraging corporate investment. 4️⃣ Denmark's Massive CDR Procurement: Denmark has secured a groundbreaking deal to procure 1.1 million tons of durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) from leading biogenic CDR companies. This marks the largest government procurement of CDR to date and is a significant milestone in Denmark's efforts to foster a robust CCS value chain. The captured CO2 will be permanently stored within Denmark's territory, contributing to the nation's climate goals. These developments underscore the growing momentum in global efforts to combat climate change. Interesting read on Australia's Carbon Budget assessment. - Australia emits 200 million tonnes of CO₂ annually from land-based sources, reducing to 140 million tonnes when coastal ecosystems are considered as carbon sinks. - Terrestrial land-based CO₂ sinks and Coastal ecosystem acts as natural carbon sinks whereas rivers, lakes, deltas contributes to CO2 emission, altogether CO2 emission offset is about one-third of Australia's fossil fuel emissions, still a large gap to cover on the road to net zero. - Despite natural sinks, achieving the net zero emissions target is crucial, as natural carbon sinks are already factored into climate stabilization plans, highlighting the ongoing need for efforts to reduce anthropogenic emissions. https://lnkd.in/gUn7-xXj
