The most comprehensive guide for corporate investors and financial institutions to understand how and why to invest in high-integrity Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) has just been launched. I am very proud of the role that the ERM Sustainability Institute as played alongside others such as WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, to achieve this. It is these kind of initiatives that will drive the investable, sustainable change we all need to see to combat the harmful effects of climate change. Alexander Cox, Sabine Hoefnagel
I am delighted to have joined colleagues and close business partners this week at the launch of ‘Natural Climate Solutions for the Voluntary Carbon Market,’ part of #LCAW2024. Together with WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Natural Climate Solutions Alliance and Forest Investor Club (FIC), our ERM Sustainability Institute has launched the most comprehensive guide to date to help corporate investors and financial institutions understand how and why to invest in high-integrity Natural Climate Solutions (NCS). The guide looks at the questions that investors should ask, familiar challenges they may face, and examples of best practices across several stages of the NCS investment process, including: ✔ Building the business case for investment. ✔ Identifying investment types, structures, and associated stakeholders. ✔ Conducting effective due diligence. ✔ Determining a fair and equitable revenue-sharing agreement. ✔ Integrating legal considerations. ✔ Implementing systems for measuring, reporting, and verifying data. Nature conservation and nature-based solutions are set to play a vital role in the fight against climate change. However, a significant nature financing gap exists, particularly from private funding. NCS can help bridge this gap by providing investors attractive returns and benefits while delivering positive climate, environmental, and social impacts. Congratulations to all involved in putting this guide together. I am positive it will be of enormous value to all those exploring the full NCS investment journey. 💪 What a strong incentive to address challenges in the voluntary carbon market! The market could double participants if it continues to tackle issues of transparency, risk and recognition. In a new survey, We Mean Business Coalition, ICE and Bain & Company reveal the attitudes of 180 companies to the VCM. 🌱 The survey is clear: the VCM can accelerate corporate spending on climate priorities that are otherwise underfunded. One such area is nature, where there remains a huge, $700 billion gap between the funds required to conserve and restore ecosystems and the amount currently spent. More than 70 percent of companies purchasing credits said it allows them to take additional action, beyond what they would do if not buying carbon credits. This is in line with findings released by Ecosystem Marketplace in 2023. Its study revealed that the companies engaging with the voluntary carbon markets were decarbonising at double the pace as those who were not. For the sake of climate and nature, we need to help more companies engage in the market. #VCM #CarbonCredits #CarbonMarkets #ClimateAction #WMBC

SBTI and Carbon offsets finally meet their way. The Science Based Targets initiative recently introduced the Beyond Value Chain Mitigation (BVCM) framework through two detailed whitepapers. This framework is a significant milestone as it officially recognizes the role of carbon credits in climate strategy beyond neutralization. By encompassing various types of climate action, including carbon credits, BVCM offers a flexible approach for companies to align with sustainability standards and accelerate climate solutions. SBTi's partnership with nonprofit and U.N. groups underscores its influence in shaping corporate sustainability standards and holds considerable sway in the corporate sustainability landscape. BVCM presents a compelling case for contributing to carbon removal, highlighting its potential to mitigate climate risk, secure investments, and align with consumer preferences for sustainability. While BVCM is not mandatory, it offers companies an opportunity to demonstrate leadership in climate action and support the transition to net-zero emissions. Overall, BVCM represents a significant advancement in climate action, providing companies with a roadmap to contribute meaningfully to climate solutions. With SBTi's support, companies can leverage carbon credits and other climate investments to accelerate progress towards a sustainable future. We help companies integrate nature solutions into their sustainability strategies. If you have questions regarding BVCM and carbon credits, you can get in touch with us. #sustainability #carboncredits #SBTI #climateaction #carbonremoval #nature

The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has issued a Call for Evidence on the Effectiveness of the Use of Environmental Attribute Certificates in Corporate Climate Targets. The deadline to submit is November 24 to respond to the call for evidence. https://lnkd.in/ddPGMc9D SBTi states that their aim in this call for evidence is to “help the corporate climate action ecosystem understand whether different instruments can credibly drive decarbonization and support corporate emission reduction claims.” Clean Energy Buyers Institute has compiled a list of resources (https://lnkd.in/e32y8uga) that CEBA is using in their submission. Please join us in highlighting the effectiveness of EACs in helping decarbonize the grid and meet corporate climate targets.
