The issues we are facing as a country, an organization and a movement are not new, but the methods, foes and tactics are changing. To advance towards justice and equity, we must change as well. We at The National Urban League are taking on a new phase of civil rights advocacy with our D3 Campaign. D3 consists of three guiding action calls: Defend Democracy, Demand Diversity and Defeat Poverty. Find out more information: https://buff.ly/3O1We85

This report highlights major cracks in most of our provisions, many of which we already see and deal with daily. The government wants our young people to stay in education, as do we as educators, but if they are young carers who live in poverty and struggle with poor mental health, with inadequate services in place, then how is that an option?? Proposals are great but they are just that; a few scribbled lines boasting false promises.
Today, the House of Lords Justice and Home Affairs Committee published an important report outlining proposals for making the most of community sentences. It includes evidence given by our director, Phil Bowen, and trustee, Courtney Bryan. Read it in full here: https://ow.ly/a0Zp50Qmnbc.

Excited to be heading to Washington, D.C. on Monday to attend the National Association of Home Builders 2024 Spring Leadership Meetings and Legislative Conference where we are sure to experience heat and humidity along with great meetings! (I am having flashback to my trip to Playa Del Carmen two weeks ago...) In my role and as someone who is passionate about our industry mission of creating homes, I work to understand the challenges that builders across the nation are facing to be a better partner, be more informed, and to forecast our own business. In preparing for next week's conference and legislative meetings, I asked builders from coast to coast to send me off with their top frustrations or hurdles. I heard everything from permit and tap fees, metro district difficulties, land taxes, to restrictive zoning boards to mandatory lot sizes. These factors (in addition to the obvious, high rates!) are drastically impacting housing affordability and accessibility. At this conference, I’ll be advocating alongside industry leaders and policymakers for solutions to these issues along with a few other items our discussions with legislators will focus on: 1. Fixing Supply Chain Disruptions by ensuring a steady supply of essential materials like transformers to avoid construction delays and keep costs down. 2. Reversing Restrictive Energy Codes by balancing sustainability with affordability to ensure homeownership remains within reach. 3. Easing Workforce Shortages by supporting programs like Job Corps to maintain a skilled labor force that drives the housing market forward. Housing affordability isn’t just a builder's issue; it’s a community and a human issue. It affects economic growth, job creation, and the overall stability of our communities. By addressing these challenges head-on, we can work towards making homeownership a reality for more families. Would love to hear from you on what you are seeing as the biggest challenge in your market considering your target consumer. Stay tuned for updates from the week ahead! #NAHB #HousingAffordability #LegislativeConference #HomeBuilding #Advocacy #CommunityGrowth #EconomicDevelopment #SupplyChain #WorkforceDevelopment

Your voice matters! It's our right and responsibility to foster relationships with those who represent us. That relationship starts with knowing who your elected officials are and how to contact them. One of the main questions we receive is how to find and contact your elected officials. For this week's #WhitneyStrongWednesday, we will share how to find your federal, state and local elected officials, along with their contact information. 1️⃣ Go to https://lnkd.in/e9R7-Dm. 2️⃣ Input your home address and select "Find my elected officials." 3️⃣ Check out YOUR federal, state and local elected officials. 4️⃣ Click the plus sign on each elected official to find their contact info, including email, phone number and social media handles. Your consistent and intelligent advocacy has made progress like the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. Take action, and let's work toward a safer community.
