Our Summer Intern Program recently wrapped and what a fantastic (and exhausting) season it was. With 14 interns throughout our 3 offices, we packed the summer with technical presentations, professional development sessions, site visits, and social gatherings. This year we also launched new initiatives to connect our interns with Senior Engineers, Associates, and Principals and the feedback was incredible! I'm welcoming the breather, but it was absolutely worth the effort this summer and incredibly fulfilling to meet and work alongside all of the great students who joined us. A big thank you to our interns for brining the energy and curiosity to our group!

This week, we honored Juneteenth, a day of profound significance in American history. To celebrate and reflect, our office's DEI Nudge group organized a meaningful trip to the Northwest African American Museum in Seattle. Those who attended went with the intention of celebration and education. "We use many voices to tell the history of African Americans. We shout, whisper, and preach. We rap, sing, and chant. We're halfway through Women in Construction Week and I wanted to share some insight from Brianna Navarro, Associate. Brianna has been managing construction projects for KPFF since 2017. One of her passions is aimed at the development of young staff, especially young women, who are not as prevalent in the construction community but whose presence is increasing. "A discussion I’ve been hearing a lot recently is about doing away with the term “Imposter Syndrome,” because it implies that there’s something wrong with us for feeling like we don’t belong – we have a syndrome – but really the fact is simply that the numbers show women and men are not proportionally represented in the construction industry. It’s not a syndrome, it’s a broken system that we’re all trying to fit into. So my advice to women in the construction industry is to claim your space, be your authentic self, and never shrink yourself down for anyone. A mentor and close friend of mine recently gave me the advice "Claim your space, be your authentic self, and never shrink yourself down for anyone." Part of me doing that is owning my story. In recent years I have started to establish myself as a leader in my engineering office as a non-engineer. I was asked to talk about the non-linear, not established path to where I currently am and am happy to have it seen and to share with you all.

I'm happy to have played such a small role as part of this project. This has been such a cool project and I've worked with such a great team. I'm so excited to see all the progress!
