Jan-Benedict Steenkamp, we conducted the first in the world blind taste test using the same wine from the same winery, one packaged in a glass bottle, one in an aluminum can. 4 different wines from 4 different wineries. Random participants, aged 21-74. Conclusion: "...no statistical difference existed based solely on the consumers' preferences... ...The vessel itself, bottle or can, has no impact on preference..." Dilemma: French chateau or Costco Kirkland Private Label? What information is dominant when people evaluate products? That question hit me when I was at Costco, seeing this Chateauneuf-du-Pape wine. Could I serve that to guests? The terroir is positive. But it is branded as Kirkland. For premium wine (sort of) that is a negative. Most of us would be reluctant to serve a store brand to your guests, not? Which market signal is determinant? There’s this red brick Thai restaurant Annie and I go to in the city. I dare say it’s our favorite restaurant as we always seem to find a way to mention it. So what’s so spectacular about it? Nothing. We sit at the bar. The noodles steam when the bowls rattle down, we smile at the first bite, and we’re out in 45 minutes. When you know what you’re getting, your brain has to do less work. Which means the path to get it is quicker, easier, and requires less thinking. Which means you’ll travel it more. It’s easy to believe splash is what creates buy-in. Hmm🫡. Yes, brands, companies, face challenges, and relevancy can be among them. I think Ms. Masino has been CEO of Cracker Barrel for coming up on a year. Is it not part of the CEO’s job to keep, make their brand(s), and company relevant? Of course, sometimes relevancy can wane, and acknowledging the truth is critical as is doing what is necessary to get it back on-track. But, might not there be a way to communicate its challenge(s) in a more hopeful, optimistic, forward looking, inspiring, confidence building, motivating way, versus publicly throwing it under the bus and facilitating a stock price/company value decline? Words, how they’re spoken, to whom they’re spoken, where they’re spoken, when they’re spoken, matter, especially if one is in a leadership position like CEO. #crackerbarrel
