Bomag’s emergency brake assist nears production readiness Bomag has announced that one of the technologies from the Robomag concept, Bomag emergency brake assist, is now approaching series production. Bomag says that its emergency brake assist is nearing production readiness The company’s emergency brake assist scans the construction machine’s operational environment in real time and recognises both moving and static obstacles and objects. Objects that could potentially be put at risk by the machine’s movement are automatically detected by the system. If a collision is imminent, it initiates automatic deceleration down to a complete stop. The company says that, by pre-emptively averting potential hazards, the technology marks a significant milestone in enhancing on-site safety. The emergency brake assist was presented with a Gold Award at the recent Intermat Innovation awards in Paris in the‚ Roads, Materials and Foundations Industries‘ category. In cooperation with selected customers, Bomag says it will test the Emergency Brake Assist on various construction sites this year. Emergency Brake Assist is compatible with Bomag’s fifth-generation tandem rollers and therefore independent of use beyond just a fully autonomous asphalt roller. As the technology nears production readiness, the final certification is being worked on in cooperation with experts. Twenty-five people are present at the EMESRT tyre handling mobile equipment credible failure modes assessment workshop in Brisbane today (18 in person and 7 virtually). Workshop purpose: a human centred, task- and scenario-based evaluation of the hazard exposures on the tyre handling vehicles and their associated manipulating attachments. Workshop facilitators: - Dr Sara Pazell, ViVA health at work - Ivan Woodcock, Prime Project Group - Prof Robin Burgess-Limerick, The University of Queensland, Sustainable Minerals Institute Key topics: - Orientation on design thinking and human equipment interface - Credible failure modes for tyre handling - Verification of control failure modes and potential unwanted events and review of equipment factors (industrial lift truck and fixed arm) - Design specifications and human readiness, contract other equipment configurations: so what? The participants broke out into small groups and tested pre-identified four scenarios against credible failure modes and potential unwanted events, including the evaluation of the industrial lift truck and grabs. EMESRT project lead and Glencore advisory group member representative, Tony Egan, said its another important step in understanding the equipment causal pathways that lead to tyre fatalities and provide industry stakeholders with a clear understanding of the problems that need to be designed out or mitigated. The workshop today has focused on one common type of tyre handler that has allowed the working group to contribute to and validate the casual pathways analysis technique. Next steps will be for the working group to use the technique on all the known types of tyre handlers and the combination of tyre grabs so that the users can use this information in their selection and purchase of fit-for-purpose equipment, concluded Tony.
