Elevating Black Excellence at Rice Business Kelly M. Christian, CPA - Online Class of 2024 What does Black excellence mean to you personally? Black excellence means continuous persistence in the face of adversity. It means standing on the shoulders of my ancestors that have overcome obstacles much greater than I have ever faced in my lifetime, to provide me with a path to opportunities, carved by their sacrifice. Black excellence means acknowledging and accepting the responsibility I have as an African-American woman, to ensure their sacrifices are not in vain. How have your unique experiences shaped your pursuit of excellence? My experiences are the fuel that motivates me to continue to reach for excellence, despite the opinions or doubts of others. Over my lifetime, those with malicious intent who have placed obstacles in my path to success, became my stepping stones to reaching my goals and aspirations. My experiences have made me stronger and more confident in my abilities, creating an unyielding determination for constant progress and advancement. In what ways do you see yourself contributing to a more diverse and inclusive future? I believe that we all possess unique talents and abilities that are both innate and influenced by our own culture and unique experiences. Those unique talents and experiences can be the path to a solution at work, school, or at home. That is why I always encourage inclusion. I also enjoy learning about different cultures and feel enriched from expanding my mind to different customs and points of view.

Black History Month gives us a great chance to learn more about the past, discovering stories that change how we think about history. Recently, I had the privilege of discussing some of the rich history of African empires with Dr Abdullah Hakim Quick Our talk highlighted the wide-ranging legacies that go beyond the stories we often hear, showing the amazing depth of African creativity and adventure. While many of us are familiar with the legendary Mansa Musa, whose wealth and pilgrimage to Mecca left an indelible mark on history, I recently discovered another captivating story in my conversation with Dr. Abdulhakim Quick — that of Mansa Musa's predecessor, Abu Bakari II. Abu Bakari II's ambitious maritime expedition, possibly reaching the Americas nearly 200 years before Columbus, not only challenges our understanding of exploration but also connects the histories of Black people in Africa with the indigenous peoples of the Americas. The story of Abu Bakari II shows the curiosity and bravery of the great African empires. It reminds us that Black history is made up of many amazing stories, covering different continents and cultures. The recent debate comment about "Black jobs" serves as a powerful reminder of why I pivoted my career to advocate for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in our workplaces and the broader society. Every day, underrepresented and historically marginalized individuals face bias and micro-aggressions that can hinder career progression and well-being. These aren't isolated incidents – they're symptoms of systemic issues that, if left unchecked and unchallenged, can lead to serious outcomes. 🔍 Bias can manifest in many forms—from hiring practices to daily interactions. It can be as overt as discriminatory hiring decisions or as subtle as consistently being overlooked for opportunities. 💬 Microaggressions are the everyday, subtle, intentional—and oftentimes unintentional—interactions or behaviors that communicate some sort of bias toward historically marginalized groups. These can range from dismissive comments to assumptions based on stereotypes. ❗️ WHY DEI MATTERS: Equity: Ensures that everyone has access to the same opportunities, leveling the playing field for all. Inclusion: Fosters a sense of belonging where all voices are heard and valued. Diversity: Brings a variety of perspectives that drive innovation and growth. Creating a culture that truly values DEI isn't just the right thing to do—it's essential for the health of our organizations and society. Very grateful for the anti-racism resources that were brought to my attention through the recent AFP Canada Leadership Retreat. My involvement with AFP Edmonton & Area Chapter has been a wellspring of resources for learning and growing both professionally and as member of my community. In particular, I have appreciated the opportunity to engage with materials that help me confront the ways in which I uphold systems of oppression. Particularly towards black and Indigenous people living in Canada. Here are some tools I'd like to share that are free: Black Canadians: History, Presence, and Anti-Racist Futures as well as Historical, Systemic and Intersectional Antiracism: From Awareness to Action https://lnkd.in/gkJNBC76 These tools are important to me because: 1. They do not require the BIPOC people in your life to answer questions that are emotionally laborious for them. 2. They allow you a space to reflect on the ways you can do better, or behaviours that you need to start/stop. 3. They equip you with the language and facts to support the feelings that are sometimes difficult or uncomfortable to articulate when having conversations about racism.
