There are many things that I am conscious about doing in my work. One of them is to ensure that clients understand how a lack of understanding about different cultural norms, linguistics, semantics and semiotics can impede progress within the diversity and inclusion agenda. We talk about diversity and inclusion, but do we really understand the impact of culture in the workplace? I know we often speak about a level playing field for employees, and that is important, but do we understand how people from different cultures articulate information in different ways, or how information which is received can be understood differently? Not only is an understanding of cultural differences important to building an environment that is competent, it is paramount for informing an organisational framework that is adept to overcoming cultural and racial barriers. Systems and frameworks that are created through a racially homogeneous mindset, miss this, and that cannot be avoided. You cannot understand what you don’t know. In order to make organisational processes effective, and culturally competent, one requires an understanding of culture. If you are not mindful of this, you are losing the battle for truly effective diversity and inclusion, often before you've even started! https://buff.ly/3p0S5YR #RaceEquity #DiversityandInclusion

Very apt Carmen Morris . This why my heart sinks when I see the term “ good culture / cultural fit “. Whose culture is being used as the basis of what is considered to be good?

I too dislike it when I see the term 'hiring for cultural fit' or when unsuccessful job candidates are given the feedback that they were not a cultural fit. Many organisations jump on to corporate buzz words without fully examining how appropriate and applicable they are to them. This article clearly sets out the importance of cultural diversity and how it impacts the workplace.
