Last week, our Deputy Director, Karinna Gonzalez spoke at a rally organized by SanDiego350 during Sempra’s annual shareholder meeting. Not surprisingly, the materials for the meeting had an absence of any meaningful mention of climate change and also did not include how the company will phase out its fossil fuel operations and transition to renewables. Sempra’s profits hit nearly $3 Billion in 2023, with profits from SDG&E alone accounting for a third - nearly $1B, with San Diegans paying one of the highest electricity rates in the entire US. Sempra and SDG&E have a history of deliberately slow-walking the transition to clean energy, greenwashing, and working to kill rooftop solar and block electrification - which is why event organizers support the Power San Diego Campaign to replace SDG&E with a public utility. The rally was also our Executive Director’s son's first climate rally! A reminder of who will be affected most by the accelerating climate crisis. Last Tuesday I had the great opportunity to participate in the panel discussion “ Decarbonizing road fuels in Germany – a market view of challenges and solutions to deliver targets” at the Argus Media German Transportation Fuels conference in Hamburg. 🙏 Many thanks to Josefine Ahlström for moderating the panel with my co-panelist Matthias Raabe from BP. Key takeaways from the discussion: 📢 When it comes to fighting climate change, we have no time to waste. We need all solutions that are available to immediately and effectively reduce GHG emissions in the transport sector. Only by leveraging the potential of all solutions in parallel will we meet the ambitious goals, required to fight climate change. 📢 We need a regulatory framework and an assessment basis to support immediate defossilization in Germany and providing the right incentivation to foster change to renewables. 📢 Renewable diesel such as Neste MY Renewable Diesel is an already existing solution that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 90% over the life cycle of the fuel compared to fossil diesel - as drop-in solution => no investment in assets, no risk!

Today is Zero Emissions Day, a day that’s been designated to give our planet a break from fossil fuels. Iron Mountain has set a goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Climate Accord.
