End of UNEA-6: the results show the way forward for the international community to tackle the triple global crisis and achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals! After a long week of negotiations, the Belgian Presidency is proud of the encouraging progress taken by UN member states towards effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral actions to combat climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution. ✅ UNEA-6 approved various actions on chemical pollution, minerals and metals, land degradation, air quality, etc. 🇪🇺 Two resolutions proposed by the EU were also adopted: ➡ Implementing effective and inclusive solutions to support and develop water policies at all levels ➡ Strengthening ocean governance efforts for the protection and conservation of our marine and coastal environments. However, the Presidency regretted the deadlock over the resolutions on nature-based solutions and the circular economy. The EU decided to withdraw its resolution on Circular Economy but will continue to engage constructively on bringing upfront this important issue. Sweden's per capita consumption-based emissions are 8,5 tonnes, far away from the Paris Agreement goal of one tonne by 2050. Our Consumption Compass helps Swedish municipalities to address their consumption-based emissions. It has garnered positive attention from municipalities, county councils and Swedish media. “We are proud that the Consumption Compass has been so well received and contributes to helping Sweden's municipalities increase their understanding of consumption-based emissions,” said Katarina Axelsson, SEI Senior Policy Fellow and project lead. With new funding from Formas, a Swedish Research Council for Sustainable Development, we are now enhancing the tool. “Several Swedish municipalities have high ambitions to reduce their climate emissions and inspire residents to long-term sustainable lifestyles. The Consumption Compass will now be further developed with new data series, future scenarios and a somewhat refined calculation model,” said Karin André, Senior Research Fellow and Team Lead at SEI. "The Consumption Compass is important to us in our climate work, and we look forward to contributing to the further development of the tool during the new phase 2023 - 2025," concludes Mirella Persson, Project Coordinator for Environmental Development in Umeå Kommun. In yesterday’s announcement of the Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles (#VCM Principles), the US government confirmed its recognition of the importance of the Voluntary Carbon Market in tackling the climate crisis. We welcome the US Government’s call to action on the importance of: ✅ Voluntary action by the private sector beyond compliance measures; ✅Taking action today to reduce global GHG emissions both through companies reducing their own emissions and using the Voluntary Carbon Market; ✅Using the Voluntary Carbon Market to quickly scaling global emission reductions; ✅Protecting and restoring natural resources through the use of the Voluntary Carbon Market; ✅The Voluntary Carbon Market’s role in economic development, sustaining livelihoods of local communities, and conserving land and water resources and biodiversity across the Globe. 🗳️Members of the EU Parliament have re-elected Ursula von der Leyen for a second term as President of the European Commission   Although weakened, von der Leyen's re-election based on her political guidelines reaffirms the continuity of the EU Green Deal and provides the EU institutions with a clear mandate to tackle the triple climate, biodiversity and pollution crisis.   While the commitment is there on paper, we need more than just implementation. The strong focus on climate cannot come at the expense of necessary actions against the biodiversity and pollution crises, as these issues are intrinsically interlinked. As we bid farewell to 2023, let’s look back at the major climate victories achieved this year and understand their significance: 1. EU's Anti-Deforestation Law: A landmark regulation by the EU aims to stop deforestation by preventing the import and trade of products linked to deforestation. This step is crucial in protecting our planet’s lungs – the forests. 2. Rate of deforestation drops: Deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon Rainforest dropped by 34% in the first half of 2023 and is estimated to have dropped by a whopping 55.8% between 2022 with 2,062,939 hectares of deforestation and 2023 with 911,740 hectares. 3. Clean Energy Investments Soar: Renewable energy investments globally have soared by 40%, signaling a shift towards eco-friendly sources like wind and solar. This growth is fueled by a blend of government, private, and international environmental funding. 4. Ozone Layer: Following action by governments to phase out ozone-depleting substances, the hole in the Earth’s ozone layer is set to be completely healed by 2040, aside from the polar regions. 5. Record Pledges for Climate Finance: A historic $12.8 billion was pledged to the Green Climate Fund by 31 countries, including Canada's notable $450 million contribution, a 50% increase from its previous commitment, emphasizing its strong support for global climate initiatives.
