The definition of Servant Leader.

Such a great reflection. Most advisers and students that have interns for their studies do not understand the sacrifice it takes to leave their homes, and make hard decisions to reach both their professional and personal goals. Earning opportunities is hard enough. However, opportunities should also aim to fulfill aspirations, respect common needs such as: eating on time, drinking enough water, having a proper place to rest, and safe installations to perform their activities. Opportunities are hope, and should never compromise physical and mental well being. Interns deserve a place on discussion tables, their names written in papers they participated in, and have the ability to show what they have learned and what they are made of. Interns are NOT less. They also have degrees, they also have knowledge, they CAN supply added value to any field, and they represent an opportunity to show how good a college and their advisors are for the rest of the world. No matter where they come from, or their background. 📝

Our interns had a chance to ask a group of CHS leaders some questions at our headquarters in Inver Grove Heights, Minn., in a recent panel event. Mary Kaul-Hottinger, Gary Halvorson, Rick Dusek, and Brandon Smith met with summer interns, both in-person and virtually. The discussion covered a variety of topics including: setting career goals, receiving feedback, culture and employee retention and more. "Always be willing to change. Look at the possibilities. Your consumption of fruits and vegetables runs so much deeper than picking up your favorite fruit at the store. Has that food been a staple in your house? For how long? Why? Did that food contain strong cultural presence? Did you think the food provides health benefits, so that is why you picked it up? Did you know where your fruit was grown, packed, and shipped from? What about the company that sold it to you? I never consciously thought about these questions, but they all played a role in my shopping habits and health outcomes. But after my 10 weeks at International Fresh Produce Association, I do! Thanks to Barbara Hochman, Larry Zink, and Rachel Blake, I'll never look at nutrition purchasing habits the same. The invaluable lessons I learned back then still guide my decisions today. The first years of one's career are not just about learning the job but about absorbing the essence of the organisation. This is when people are most receptive to new ideas, most eager to prove themselves, and most likely to form lasting impressions about their chosen field. Today, young professionals are reimagining the concept of "paying their dues." They want to be part of an inclusive, empowering environment from the get-go, one that values their input and helps them learn lessons they can carry throughout their careers. In essence, rethinking the early career experience is not only an investment in our company's future. It's about creating a symbiotic relationship where young professionals can thrive and contribute meaningfully from day one. See: AGLEGECY.org > Modules KEEPING IT in the family – Several options exist to keep the farm or ranch in the family: 1. Lease out the land to a family member; 2. Lease the land to someone outside your family; or 3. Hire an outside manager, while retaining ownership. NO LONGER in the family – Sometimes, it may be impractical to pass the farm or ranch to the next generation. In such situations, families should carefully weigh the trade-offs between equal versus equitable distribution strategies. Some options that families might consider: 1. Divide the property between the children; 2. Sell the operation and pass on the money; or 3. Gift the land to a university as a location for an intern program site. FROM OUTSIDE the family – Consider bringing in an unrelated family that is passionate about agriculture and interested in taking over the operation as another option. This approach can be a rewarding way to continue the legacy while also supporting the next generation of farmers. OTHER options – Other options for transfering a legacy might include gifting, forming a trust or working with an internship program.

Ready for the Superbowl? From all of tonight’s event-related content one could read these days, this is the piece that struck me most. Taking the entire staff -including interns, of course- to Vegas is a great way to acknowledge their hard work and contributions. After all, an organization's success is a collective effort, and celebrating as a team is crucial in building the culture that got you there, and that will guide you through those times in which you don´t make it to your own Superbowl. #teamworkmatters

Cate Stone, an #OASEIntern at Pacific Seafood, writes: As a wastewater pollutant and best management practices (BMP) intern for Pacific Seafood, my primary project goal is to identify ways to reduce pollutant concentrations in the company’s seafood processing wastewater. More specifically, I am looking at technological and behavioral changes that can be made upstream at multiple facilities that process shrimp and finfish. My first couple of weeks have focused on building background knowledge about current seafood processing procedures at Pacific Seafood and what other BMPs are known about in the industry. This has included interviewing different people at Pacific Seafood, literature searching, and touring facilities on the Oregon Coast. One thing that has surprised me is how specialized each species’ processing steps are and all the different ways waste can be reduced or reused.  Cate is participating in the Oregon Applied Sustainability Experience: Internship Program, which is run by Oregon Sea Grant and the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.
