The US Military's mission is to defend and win wars. But recruiting has become increasingly complex, hindering our ability to achieve that goal. It's time for politicians to step aside and let the Military do what it does best- focus on teamwork, commitment to mission, and duty, honor, and country. By recruiting warriors with the highest standards and utilizing retiree/veteran assistance, we can promote sacrifice, heroism, and gallantry. The mission of the American Legion is to enhance the well-being of America's veterans, their families, our military, and our communities by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.[3] The key pillars of the American Legion's mission are: 1. Veterans: Providing services and support to veterans such as VA benefits claims counseling, advocacy for the VA healthcare system, education benefits, career services, and support for homeless veterans. 2. Defense: Supporting active military personnel, reserve components, and advocating for national security, quality of life, and benefits for service members. 3. Children & Youth: Offering youth programs like American Legion Baseball, scholarships, oratorical contests, Boys State/Nation, and support for children in need. 4. Americanism: Promoting patriotism, respect for the flag, National Anthem, Pledge of Allegiance, and good citizenship. The American Legion is devoted to upholding the U.S. Constitution, maintaining law and order, preserving memories of military service, and consecrating comradeship through mutual helpfulness. Its motto is "Veterans Strengthening America."

I'm calling on my network to support a highly personal and crucial piece of legislation that impacts the lives of our combat-injured veterans: the Major Richard Star Act (S. 344). This act, with over two-thirds of Congress backing it, aims to correct an injustice faced by many of our heroes who have sacrificed so much for our nation. The current system unjustly reduces retired pay dollar-for-dollar by the amount of disability compensation received. Retired pay is earned through years of dedicated service, while disability compensation addresses lifelong injuries. These benefits, established by Congress for entirely different reasons, should not be offset against each other. As Lt. Col. Mark Belinsky, USA (Ret), MOAA's director of Government Relations for Currently Serving and Retired Affairs, said, “Saving money on the backs of our combat-injured is a problem Congress can fix this year.” It's time for our leaders to take action. Let's urge Congress to include the Major Richard Star Act in the FY 2025 NDAA. Our combat-injured veterans deserve better. This Memorial Day we recognize and honor the sacrifice of our service members. We remember those we lost and are grateful to every soul who fought for our country. Thank you to our American soldiers, veterans, military, and service workers. May God strengthen those still in the field and may there be a safe trip home.
