Senior Director, Diversity in Clinical Trials at Johnson & Johnson | 2024 British Diversity Awards Highly Commended in 'Hero of the Year' Category | Micro:bit Educational Foundation Board | Slough CVS Trustee
Just about to set off on my new adventure at Johnson & Johnson as Senior Director/ Head Diversity in Clinical Trials. 🎉 I am passionate about making sure that medicines are developed with all patients in mind. That only happens when we are “INTENTIONAL ABOUT INCLUSION”. All patients irrespective of sex, age, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, geographic location, visible or invisible disabilities etc. deserve the right to be able to participate in trials so that they: 1. have access to new medicines 2. know that the drug was designed with them in mind 3. have the confidence that the product should work on them with an acceptable risk:benefit profile. We as the #pharmaceutical industry have to long way to go to earn the trust of the #patients who in many instances have very little information about what happens in a #clinicaltrial. I hope in this new journey I can work with the J&J teams to build on the tremendous work they have been already been engaged in at the community level across multiple geographies, consistently over many years. I hope we as an Industry can forge a better relationship with the communities, including patients, patient advocacy organisations, regulators, vendors, HCPs, and other partners within the healthcare ecosystem that we operate in. I started working in the Clinical Trial Diversity space a couple of years ago so it should feel like a comfortable transition between companies in the same sector. But, I have admired J&J from afar for so long that I am also very conscious of the responsibility I take on and have more than butterflies! 🦋 I know there is already an amazing team in place that have been spearheading efforts within our industry. So looking forward to seeing what I can do to help solidify efforts. Thank you Staci Hargraves for putting your trust in me. If someone had told me a few years ago that I would be in this role I wouldn’t have believed it. 🥳 The best advice I was given in my entire career is to “not just focus on the destination, but enjoy the journey”. I have held that close and chosen a path which might have taken longer but I have loved the journey. The biggest lesson in my journey has been that I need to believe in me, stay resilient and build my network (by being transparent about what I care about, what I am good at and what I want to achieve) - and leave the rest to the universe to facilitate. I hope that helps others looking to move into a great opportunity. A big “Thank you” to all those who reached out privately and publicly on the LinkedIn post and for the wonderful messages on the leaving card from Novartis colleagues. I am so absolutely touched and hope I will continue to make you proud. Please let’s join forces to make our industry one that has the #respect of the people they serve. #clinicaltrialdiversity #equitymatters

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE -William Cowper (1785) Within medical affairs, there is much emphasis on the value of specialization, but what about the “utility player?” Is it advantageous to be solid in a lot of different areas as opposed to an expert in one? MEDAMETHEUS thinks so. My contemplation of this led me to the following items, which are in no particular order, and this is certainly not a comprehensive list: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 🌶️ COMPANY ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE/CULTURE: Not too long ago, I was one of the scientific strategists for a very small R&D company with a single asset evaluated in multiple therapeutic areas over decades. Had I been so laser-focused in one therapeutic application; I would not have been able to assess the viability of and make recommendations for all of their therapeutic tracks. 🌶️ PROBLEM-SOLVING: I have been a part of and built many teams in multiple therapeutic areas. The one common thread for success is that the more functionally diverse and capable teams manage “surprises” with a more resolute, levelheaded, industrious approach. Before you condemn a non-linear professional trajectory, consider that those with broader experiences with “embracing the new” tend to act more prudently in uncertain times. 🌶️ CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION: Regardless of the industry, cross-functional communication and alignment is a key success factor. However, depending on the task and its level of urgency, the optimal scope and frequency of cross-functional collaboration can be elusive, especially if your workforce is fragmented with excessive specialization and/or “siloed.” A more broadly trained or skilled workforce can help reduce “collaboration burnout.” 🌶️ PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: One of the keys to successful talent recruitment and retention, is providing opportunities for self-directed or sponsored/mentored professional development. The onus is on employers here, but committing to professional workforce development can help create functional redundancies; thus, reducing employee turnover. Consequently, a more stable workforce that can accommodate a greater variety of tasks and projects more efficiently. 🌶️ TALENT RECRUITMENT & RETENTION: These are major resource investments for any organization of any size. Unfortunately, not all companies do this well, stumbling right out of the gates with disjointed onboarding and training protocols. High employee turnover can stymie project momentum and sabotage workforce morale. Building in redundancy with broadly skilled FTEs in your workforce can ease the pain and costs of inevitable turnover. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 #MEDAMETHEUS #medicalaffairs #consulting #yourutilitypartner #strategy #partnership #vision2030 #versatility #adaptability #embracingthenew

After 5 years of being a CRA, I was ready for a new challenge. So, I changed industries and joined Tech. 🔥 Experienced CRAs have a world of career opportunities beyond the clinical trial and pharma industry path, armed with versatile skills that transcend industries, making soft skills a valuable asset for any role they choose to pursue. #clinicalresearch #clinicalresearchassociate #clinicaltrials #clinicalresearchtraining #clinicaltrials #careerdevelopment #careergrowth
I’m an experienced CRA and ready for the next challenge. What are my options? 🤩😮💨 Back in the day when I was ready for the after-CRA life, I turned to Google for answers and asked: What are the career opportunities for an experienced CRA? These are just some of the options I received back. Reading these, I felt completely lost. 🌊 Thoughts of being stuck in the CRA-CTM-PM pathway within the pharmaceutical industry began to take shape. But I craved a new challenge so, I took the risk and jumped off the board. Switched industries. 🚣 Reflecting on this journey, the career options for a CRA are nearly limitless. 🌟 As a CRA, you might have experienced or at least have seen first-hand every step of a clinical trial, from the design of the protocol, selecting sites, doing regulatory submissions, to monitoring all sorts of trials in all sorts of therapeutic areas. You have experience working across teams, roles, and even across industries (if we can say the medical industry is very different from the pharmaceutical industry)! You are a great communicator having been the bridge between sites, CRO, and Sponsor who all speak a different language. You have experience in high-stress environments, always under a deadline. The takeaway? 🔥💎 👉 Develop those soft skills! They will prove invaluable in any role you choose after your CRA role. The possibilities are boundless, and your experience as a CRA equips you with the adaptability and resilience to thrive in any industry or role you choose next. #clinicalresearch #clinicalresearchassociate #clinicaltrials #clinicalresearchtraining #clinicaltrials #careerdevelopment #careergrowth
