🌸 Myth busted: Women are not born mothers! 🤱💪 After celebrating Mother's Day last Sunday and International Women's Day, I wanted to share my take on motherhood. Before I became a mum, I always heard about the magical moments – holding your child for the first time, life's most important milestones, and all that jazz. 🌈 While those moments are truly special, what often goes unsaid is the wild ride of Matrescence – the physiological, psychological, and emotional roller coaster associated with becoming a mum. Being a mum means juggling the joy of motherhood with the internal struggles: "Who am I now? Is my previous self gone forever? Will I be able to do what I used to do? Am I an Entrepreneur, a mum, or both?" 🤔 I will be raw, my personal journey involved confronting my internal demons while trying to define my new identity, embracing all the roles I wanted to play, and finding that delicate balance to enjoy each one. 🚀 As we celebrate International Women's Day and Mother's Day, I believe it is important to raise awareness about the challenges we face and to normalise speaking about them. Late to the party but as Mother's Day approached, I couldn’t resist but to reflect on the journey of motherhood intertwined with career ambition. The transition back to work after maternity leave was a whirlwind of emotions. I was torn between the desire to excel in my career and the overwhelming longing to be with my child. I'll admit, I felt like I was losing my grip. How do other women seamlessly balance it all? I reached out for guidance, hoping to find solace in shared experiences. Some dismissed my struggles, while others boasted about their support systems. Yet, amid the sea of responses, one sentiment stood out - the need for women to open up about their challenges as mothers. We need spaces where we can share our fears, doubts, and vulnerabilities without judgment. I yearned for a mentor, a fellow mom in the workplace, to offer a comforting embrace and assure me that my feelings were valid. It's in these moments of support that we find strength and resilience. Let’s pledge that by next year’s Mother's Day, we would not only honor the incredible women in our lives but also become allies to one another. Let's accept the beauty in diversity of our experiences and uplift each other, regardless of our paths. Many of us were taught to be self-sacrificing. To put everyone else’s needs and happiness above our own. This has caused so many women to become a shell of themselves. So far away from who they are at their core, all in an effort to take care of everyone else, when the person who needs you the most is YOU. Put Your Cape Away was born out of my own journey. As I navigated the complexities of motherhood and my career, I realized how lonely it was, and how little women had open and honest conversations about what it actually takes to be a working mom. And beyond that, there are not a lot of resources to help on this journey. My vision for Put Your Cape Away is to illuminate a path for working mothers toward lives overflowing with joy. Becoming a mom changed my entire life in so many ways. No matter how I sliced it, this person will always come first to me. To be forced to live any other way is outside of that value and even the dreams I have for my family. Identifying this and standing firm in that value has upset situations that were not for me. Admittedly, the situations were probably never right for me, but stepping into motherhood had me evaluating my life for what I needed rather than what I hope for it to be. This is an easier conversation to have with others that value family as much as I do. I find that usually those people are parents themselves, or people who aspire to have a family. I've found some of my safest spaces with other mothers. We know how hard we work to juggle the lives that we have. In speaking my values, I've made space for: 1. Other women who have similar values to mine 2. Connecting with these women on a deeper level that will help to make more space for us at the table, no matter what industry we are in. 3. Opportunities to do work with people who truly value my input and ideas 4. In the face of traditional expectations and unsolicited advice, it's crucial to remember that every mother's journey is unique and equally commendable. Comments like "A good mother doesn't work but stays home to focus on her children," or questions such as, "You left your kids with your husband so you can work?" I have found stem from a place of love, though they carry the weight of outdated norms. They reflect a generational and geographical divide, yet they underscore a common misunderstanding of a mother's resilience and capability. Being a mother has taught me invaluable skills that extend far beyond the confines of home. Multitasking, delegation, navigating chaos, negotiation, empathy, prioritisation, creativity, resourcefulness, and timely management - these are not just parenting tools, but essential professional competencies. Each day might bring its challenges, looking and feeling overwhelming, yet it's the relentless spirit of motherhood that propels me forward. Our children, our careers, and our education demand a similar nurturing approach - a blend of love, sacrifice, hard work, and determination that helps me overcome cultural and gender biases. As we approach International Women's Day, let's celebrate the incredible resilience of working mothers. You are a queen, an inspiration, and the embodiment of strength and determination. Your journey is a beacon for your children, showing them that it's possible to be a mother, partner, entrepreneur, worker, student - whatever they aspire to be.
