Many of us are supposedly in the 'top 1%', and I guess we could be called 'elites' -- born this way, or ambitiously self-made -- therefore as a global class we must be willing to be the most self-critical in the first instance, if any discussions arise about stemming social inequality. Many insecure people are actually eager to uphold a hierarchical society; e.g., anyone seeking status via 'costly signalling'/ heroic consumerism are doing just this (whether they are conscious of this, or not). But the paradox is, it's likely to be only the elites that will be able to engineer change. I believe it will be the people who have both been working people AND elite in their own lifetimes -- one and the same -- who will have the most both-ways empathy and governing intelligence, here.

Now that's a very interesting observation from this professional champion.

The world should do so many more things “like a girl”. A couple that I’ve been reading about: 1. Conflict Resolution. Why: Women tend to approach conflicts with a greater focus on dialogue and finding mutually beneficial solutions, rather than confrontation. Why: Women, on average, exhibit more patience, especially in stressful or uncertain situations, which can be beneficial in long-term planning and decision-making. Self-care and Health Awareness Why: Women are generally more proactive in taking care of their health, scheduling regular check-ups and maintaining better self-care routines. Source: American Psychological Association, 2014, study on health behaviors by gender. 4. Collaboration Why: Women often excel in teamwork environments, showing more willingness to cooperate and less competition in group dynamics. Source: McKinsey Women in the Workplace Report, 2022. I’m always proud of myself when I finish a book cover to cover 📚 (it’s a rarity these days!) Henry Coutinho-Mason and his co author Rohit Bhargava produced an incredible read that transcends one dimensional thinking and gives us a glimpse of The Future Normal 🔮 I was lucky enough to catch up with Henry at the end of last year, who was a speaker at our executive offsite a couple years ago (phenomenal speaker - highly recommend!) There are so many great takeaways from this book that are highly relevant to any industry. From #biophilic skyscrapers to #generativeai these stories offer an optimistic yet deeply human view of the next decade as we tackle some of the biggest #ethical and #societal questions raised by all this progress. I don’t want to spoil it but a few key thoughts from a real estate perspective that I found particularly insightful: how we connect, get healthy and thrive: 🔆Immersive Experiences - what if you could be part of the entertainment instead of watching it passively (#experiential retail owners and operators have an enormous opportunity in this space working in collaboration with #mixeduse schemes) 🔆Ending Loneliness - what if closing the generation gap could cure loneliness at any age (#livingsector operators and developers creating more intergenerational schemes) 🔆Ambient Health - what if buildings and homes protected and even boosted our health and well-being (#loopliv and other operators are tackling this challenge) how we live, work and consume: 🔆Reflective Cultures - what if our organizations’ cultures reflected the societies in which they operate (*incredibly #diverse societies) 🔆Big Brand Redemption - what if more of the world’s big businesses prioritized doing good over #profits (and in the process generating enhanced #returns) 🔆Impact Hubs - what if your #office space could contribute to the local #economy and #community (greater #socialimpact) how humanity will survive: 🔆New Collectivism - what if #startup founders dreamed of more than #venturecapital and #unicorns 🔆Good Governing - what if #government policies were recognized for actually making citizens’ lives better 🔆the 15-minute City - what if every long journey in the city was cut to 15 minutes 🔆Beyond Net Zero - what if companies aimed beyond going #carbononeutral and toward being actively #regenerative Just to name a few! Highly recommend a full read to kick start the creative ideas for 2024 and what we’re doing next to change the world for the better.
