On February 28th, 2024, I cold messaged a CEO on LinkedIn, and within three minutes, I received a reply. The next morning, I received an email invitation to set up an interview with the company. I want to share this post by Abigayle Peterson with my network to emphasize the importance of networking. Keep cold messaging, cold emailing, and submitting applications. Persistence and feedback will help you secure your dream role. Don't give up, even when faced with rejection. Take a break when frustration sets in, but keep chasing your goals. We hacked our boss’s LinkedIn — don’t tell Wells 🤫 As our time interning at July comes to a close, we wanted to let the world know what it’s really like interning for a creator economy start-up. Here’s what Wells will never tell you about working at July: - Photoshopping your boss’ face onto a Game of Thrones poster is a real assignment. - July Book Club was not as fun as it sounded (no one read the book on time, ever). - Sometimes it’s up to the interns to “cater” BTI creator economy events. P.S. Now that we’re going to be jobless in less than a month, we’re taking requests for custom charcuterie spreads. - You’re going to have to hear Wells constantly talk about following up with people, sometimes over 20 times. After all, your follow-up game determines your success. - You will constantly be listening to "interesting" house music — shoutout Playground. - You may be pitted against your fellow intern in a Figma battle to the death (winner gets a free lunch!) — shoutout Daniel Magill. - You must do everything in your power to make your ~25-year-old team feel young and hip. Shoutout to our (grand)mother figure Margot Beard — you’re looking rather youthful today. - You’ll get the best sweet treat recommendations in SoHo from Ikshita Puri. - You’ll get asked countless hypothetical questions and share your love for Chappell Roan with Brett Kolodny. - You’ll hear some wild lunch time stories and stay up-to-date on the latest Love Island drama from Emma Botti. Who would’ve thought that we’d be carrying the humor in the office... We know they'll miss us dearly and we'll be impossible to replace, but all good things must come to an end. It is so easy to forget that my existence is "ONE physical entity" for over achievers like me! This Quarter I stretched myself thin expanding on business ideas I had in my mind - transition from ideas to action has been pretty intense. First expansion was "Art Classes for Adults" - designed it session-based, twice a month since commitment to ongoing schedule is very hard for parents (personal experience!). The customer response initially was great, and reality stuck a month later when the signups dwindled. I still believe there's potential in this, we will tweak it as the year progresses. Second expansion was adding few more schools/pre-schools under our wing - we had to quickly buckle-up & get ready for the ride. Expanding on art projects we bring to life, gathering materials, managing schedules, hiring high school interns to help us with classes. We will continue on this journey in foreseeable future - it adds value to our business & our customers i.e. educational institutions. As I screech through the unknown territory, I have 2 amazing mentors whom I know from my 18-year corporate career, Justine Metz & Vijay Taneja - heartfelt appreciation for being there to guide me through this. I always remind myself the mantra I truly believe; it's less about where I am headed & more about what I learn on the way there. Have a great summer!
