ICYDK - it’s an outdoor music festival thingy for trendy youngish folk In passing, she asked a few pretty good Monetization questions This is what puzzled her: 1. Why are concerts sooo expensive? 2. What on earth is an online ticket service fee? I was more than happy to give her my tuppence hay penny views Firstly, I said the artists 👩🎤 can 👩🎤 🎤 charge what they want. The better the artist, the more they can charge. The festival also bundled many artists together. Thus creating even more value. She nodded and kind of got that. Beyoncé and Taylor! Say no more. Next up: online ticket fees. “Ah, that’s just junk fees.” “Junk fees.” She asked. “Yeah, junk fees. Extra online ticket fees companies charge on top.” “But online transactions don’t cost anything!” “Well, that’s not quite true. Banking fees cost about 3% to process your payment.” “Ok. But they charged me £14 service fee and a £3 handling fee.” She screamed! That’s like 20%! “Yeah, the £3 is probably for the banking part. And the £14 is all gravy.” “Gravy?” “Yeah. That’s just money for old rope. Extra charges for nothing.” “Well, not quite for nothing. It’s for profit. So they can make more money.” She huffed and said ok. We all do the same. But are junk fees just lazy pricing? We all love value pricing. And many would pay hundreds to see their favourite artist, footballer or concert pianist. That’s value exchange.
