The sandy shores of Southern California are slipping away, bringing a wave of economic consequences. A USC study predicts coastal living costs will rise fivefold by 2050 due to beach erosion. Beaches around the world are disappearing rapidly, driven by rising sea levels and urban development. This research highlights the urgent need for global solutions to address coastal erosion and protect our economies and environments. 🌴

Our paper "Feedbacks between city development and coastal adaptation: A systems thinking approach" is out. The paper explores emerging feedback mechanisms between city development and coastal adaptation and their manifestation in theory and practice. We analyze the cascading effects of three generic adaptation strategies on coastal urban processes. The findings emphasize that sustainable adaptation pathways require a system lens for holistic decision-making to avoid cross-sectoral burden shifting and increased vulnerabilities. If you don't have time to review the full report, at least take a look at the 4 Takeaways from the 2022 Sea Level Rise Report. Takeaway #1 mirrors my personal observations of water levels in coastal Alabama over the last 30 years. Boat ramp parking lots and roads that never flooded at high tide now do so multiple times a month. Flats on north end of Mobile Bay that used to be dry at low tide now have 6-8" of water over them. The time is now to start planning and taking actions to make our communities more resilient for the next 30-100 years of SLR.

Interesting map... This study from open data shows Sweden to have the 4th lowest rating of perceived safety at night... Of course, one study does not tell the whole truth but looking at the National Crime Survey numbers (85% think crime has increased substantially and 53% highly concerned about unsafety in society) we may want to rethink and see Sweden as an outlier in comparison to other countries instead of the normal...
