Why it's important to avoid saying you “already knew” when someone comes out🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️: People sometimes make such comments explicitly to mock - for example, saying "the closet was glass" when someone rumoured to be LGBTQIA+ discloses their identity. However, it can also be said with loving intention by people who want to reassure the person coming out that they are an ally and advocate. And for some, that reassurance is felt and appreciated. But for others, it can be invalidating. The experience of not being open about your identity to a particular person or within a certain environment can be a stressful one. Saying you “already knew” or “we already knew” can minimise that struggle and diminish the effort it often takes to share who you are with someone. Additionally, you're centering yourself in a moment that shouldn't be about you, especially if that’s your immediate first response. The person has shared who they are because they’d like your support and the freedom to be their authentic selves, not to validate your observations and assumptions. If your intention is to provide reassurance and demonstrate support, it’s more affirming to simply express that. Empathy isn't always about feeling exactly what one is going through. Sometimes, it's acknowledging that you can't fully understand their experience. Recently, I had a profound conversation with someone who is undergoing a gender affirmation surgery. She has been dealing with health challenges, navigating a separation from her partner, facing rejection from her parents, and coping with the loss of her job. When she shared these deeply personal struggles with me, I responded, "All these sound so personal, thank you for trusting me and sharing. You don't deserve any of this. I am trying to imagine, but the reality is that I can't. I want to support you - please help me help you." Her response touched me deeply: "A lot of people say they can imagine and I tell them that they can't. You are the first person who said that you can't imagine, thank you for being real." This moment reminded me that sometimes the best way to show empathy is to be honest and accept that we can't fully grasp someone else's pain. No matter what you watch, listen to, or read, you will notice that the entire world seems to think that they are required to give an opinion. It doesn't seem to matter what the subject is, and whether or not the person actually knows anything about the subject, they just seem to feel the need to comment. Look at the events industry and human behavior. I, for one, am unplugged and uninterested in hearing opinions and unapologetic comments that people find the time to share. As for me - I just want a presentation of the facts, and I prefer to decide for myself. If something is on my radar that I don't like, I change it by ignoring it. If I see a post that I don't agree with, I scroll past it. I do not feel the need to argue or comment online especially when it is hurting another human being. Our society has become so judgmental, and I wish people would lead more by example instead of by opinion. After many conversations with individuals, I know I am not alone in this thought! Rather than ask “how bad do I want confidence” why don’t you ask yourself… 💥 “Why do I want it?” 💥 And then once you’ve asked yourself that, ask yourself “why?” again, and then ask yourself 3-5 more times. If you say “I want to be confident because I want to be able to…”, That’s cool, but there’s no raw emotion. You need to get to the root and really understand your “WHY”. Because if you don’t, you’ll coast, you’ll put things off, you’ll put your attention elsewhere on other things that you ‘think’ you value more. I can 100% guarantee if you ask yourself this question and repeat “why?” after each answer… By the time you reach the 4th “why” you’ll have attached more emotion to your confidence goal than you ever have before. Pinky promise! That’s when the real results happen, that’s when you get consistent, that’s when you start believing it’s possible, and that’s how you’ll always conquer peaks of feeling deflated/demotivated. Making myself visible - not just during Lesbian Visibility Week, but every week. EVERY SINGLE DAY. It is hard to show up, day after day. I have daily commitments that mean I could quite easily NOT show up today. Or tomorrow. Or next Wednesday. I have responsibilities that take me away from my desk, out of the country for days/weeks at a time - which means I could make the excuse NOT to show up. To not produce content for you to read. I have things that really knock me off balance. That shake me to the core. I get daily emails, messages from TROLLS, from people that think I should be INVISIBLE. And they are very vocal about that. Yet, I continue to show up. EVERY SINGLE DAY. Because I know there may be just ONE person that sees my posts. Or that I speak to in person. That hears ONE thing in the messages I am delivering. That ONE thing could change the entire trajectory of their life. THAT is why I show up and make myself VISIBLE. How about you? What do you do to be visible in YOUR community? Life is a roller-coaster! 🎢 The difference to an amusement park though is that you often cannot pick the rides you're on... Finding your path in the dark? Panicking people to your left and right? The odd backwards looping? You gotta do it... No choice. But you also don't need to queue or meet a minimum height. So there's that. 🤭 And I know that you have your ups and downs and sometimes proper free fall moments. We all do and you're certainly not alone. While we cannot always curate our tour through life, we do have one unique power: We can decide how we want to feel during these moments. Look at my face on the photo. Taken out of context, it could be scared, it could be excited or it could be right after biting into my first lemon. Nobody would know. You see, nerves and excitement feel the same to our body. Whether we hold the winning lottery ticket or being pulled up Splash Mountain, our sensations are exactly the same. It is our self-dialogue and interpretation that make a MASSIVE difference. They frame our experiences and can make us feel either powerless or resilient. What choice will you make?
