Cassioli, Gold Sponsor of the second edition of the "Doctoral Summer School on Robotics and Intelligent Machines – DRIMS2", participated yesterday with great interest in the panel discussion that took place in Volterra, Pisa. During the meeting, our project manager Ettore Cassioli had the opportunity to meet the students and introduce them to the Company, interacting and answering with their questions and curiosities. DRIMS2 is taking place these days at the SIAF International School of Higher Education in Volterra and is part of the "National Doctoral Program in Robotics and Intelligent Machines". This interesting program is mainly aimed at PhD students, who thanks to it will achieve advanced skills in strategic sectors such as the design of robots, sensors, artificial perception, control and human-machine interaction. In May 2024, the kick-off meeting of the two winning projects of the technological challenge "Bio-inspired sensor technology" took place at our Campi Bisenzio site (Florence). This is one of the five challenges hosted within #SolversWanted, #Leonardo's technological scouting platform that identifies and promotes innovative solutions, in collaboration with universities, research centres, companies and start-ups on a global scale. 💡 The Bio-inspired sensor technology challenge, launched in October 2023, was aimed at finding solutions in the field of neuromorphic sensors to be used in Detection & Tracking applications. The winners of the challenge were awarded a 12-month contract for direct collaboration with Leonardo: 🏆 The EYE-TECH start up from Carrara with the EYE2DRIVE - Building the digital EYE project, aims to provide a prototype system to be used for image acquisition tests in critical situations and highly variable and non-optimal lighting conditions. 🏆 The Department of Computer Science, Bioengineering, Robotics and Systems Engineering of the University of Genoa (Università degli Studi di Genova) with the SENSE-NN - symbolic end-to-end neuromorphic sensing project, with the objective of developing a robust hybrid framework that will employ neuromorphic sensors within a Large Language Model (LLM) capable of making rapid decisions, because it will use the data coming from the sensors, avoiding canonical algorithmics. https://lnkd.in/dsk4WWNF #Leonardo4Innovation

From greenhouses to operating theatres, soft robotics holds the promise to handle delicate objects with human-like dexterity and care in real-world environments. 👨🌾👩⚕️ Shibo Zou received a NWO Veni grant for his project Fluidic Sensing: Giving Soft Robots the Sense of Touch 🎉 Sensory feedback is crucial to achieve high autonomy. Fluidic sensing extracts feedback mechanically through the actuation pressure variation induced by shape change and can potentially bring the sense of touch to soft fluidic robots. However, this actuation pressure variation is currently too low for practical applications. “I aim to unravel the underlying mechanical design principles that can amplify the actuation pressure variation in fluidic sensing and translate these principles into multifunctional soft robotic devices for real-world applications”, says Zou. What an honor! My brilliant PhD student Bruno Ferrarini has won the runner-up award for the The Queen Mary UK Best PhD in Robotics Competition. This prize is presented on an annual basis to the best PhD thesis in the area of robotics in the United Kingdom. The award decision this year was made based on the reviews from an excellence committee consisting of top roboticists from around the world (Tamim Asfour, Maren Bennewitz, Yiannis Aloimonos, Cecilia Laschi, Giulio Sandini, Aude Billard, Jose' Santos-Victor, Carme Torras, Takayuki Kanda, Veronique Perderau, Jee-Hwan Ryu, Serena Ivaldi, Matteo Fumagalli, Alessandra Sciutti, Kazuo Kiguchi, Rania Rayyes, Shinichi Hirai, Ruwan Gopura and Isuru Godage). Bruno was co-supervised by Prof Klaus McDonald-Maier at the University of Essex. A special thanks to Prof Michael Milford for his continuous support and guidance throughout Bruno's PhD research. We could not have done this without you, Michael Milford! Bruno's PhD thesis titled "Improving Visual Place Recognition in Changing Environments" made significant contributions to the field by proposing novel binary neural networks for solving the visual place recognition problem for resource-constrained robotic systems (such as drones). Gli obiettivi formativi del corso riguardano la ricerca scientifica in diversi ambiti disciplinari, tra i quali è presente ‘Sfide strutturali / Structural challenges’, a cui sono assegnati 2 posti con borsa di studio. One of the structural outcomes of PhenoRob is our new Center for Robotics Bonn at our The University of Bonn.
Our new Center for Robotics at the University of Bonn has been founded in January. The Center brings together the research groups and faculties working on robotics, especially in engineering and computer science. We are conducting cutting-edge collaborative research on and with intelligent autonomous robots such as through the DFG Cluster of Excellence PhenoRob. The Center for Robotics also supports innovative educational courses, and we will start a new cross-faculty Masters of Mobile Robotics with first enrollment possibilities for 2025. The founding team comprises Cyrill Stachniss, Sven Behnke, Maren Bennewitz, Juergen Gall, Heiner Kuhlmann, Chris McCool, Jens Behley, Lasse Klingbeil, and Raphael Memmesheimer. We are bringing together six strong research groups from different faculties making substantial contributions to robotics. I passi avanti che stiamo facendo grazie alla robotica in ambito medico sono sbalorditivi. Mi domando quanto tempo ci vorrà affinché queste tecnologie siano portata di tutti. Mi incuriosisce sapere ne quanto tempo ci vorrà prima che diventi possibile eseguire delle operazioni interne, in modo tale da rimuovere tumori in maniera poco invasiva e più sicura sfruttando appunto la robotica, l’AI, e la nanotecnologia. Chissà quanto tempo ci vorrà prima che queste nuove invenzioni/creazioni diventino uno standard per permettere ai più di trattare malattie e operazioni in maniera meno rischiosa. Quali saranno gli utilizzi più ingegnosi per tale tecnologia? Quanto tempo ci vorrà per trovarla all’ospedale più vicino a casa? Quali saranno le regolamentazioni e i limiti? Sono davvero curioso, voi che cosa ne pensate?

– My research strengthens our understanding of Multiview Geometry and provides new frameworks to help improve the 3D reconstruction pipeline for autonomous vehicles and visual media, says WASP PhD student Felix Rydell. On June 14th, Felix Rydell, WASP PhD student at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, successfully defended his doctoral thesis “Algebraic Advances in Multiview Geometry”. What are the main findings of your doctoral thesis? – This thesis examines Structure-from-Motion from an algebraic point of view. We state new compatibility conditions for fundamental matrices, prove theoretical results on the accuracy of the Sampson error, provide an in-depth study of line and conic correspondences, explore triangulation with incidence relations, and introduce generalized multiview varieties arising from projections of higher dimensional subspaces. In what way can your research be of importance to our society in the future? – My research strengthens our understanding of Multiview Geometry and provides new frameworks to help improve the 3D reconstruction pipeline for autonomous vehicles and visual media.
