Breaking News!! John Deere buys AgLeader and Kinze for 10 Billion dollars combined!!! Well…not quite yet. Yes, April Fools but is that headline that unrealistic really? With their recent news of “working” together now after years of legal crap they seemed to figure something out and have a bigger plan. Personally, I think the recent news they are trying to do something is the setup to a future acquisition by Deere of them as let’s be honest, who else would or could do it? They are all based in Iowa, check. Al Meyers definitely wants a lot and AgLeader makes money plus has patents. The Kinzenbaw family is similar I’d say plus they have a strategic partnership with AgLeader. Why would Deere buy it? To crush its competition even further through pure power. They see the moves CNH and AGCO have made and while not overly worried I actually think they do have some concern atleast with AGCO due to Precision Planting and Trimble. The other reality is AgLeader and Kinze are primed now to sell. Also, can they wait or just stay independent where Ag is moving? Maybe, but I think they have a weird window right now. From AI to robotics, they probably are thinking of a strategic move as well. All in all, my bet is it actually happens soonish. Say 1-2 years max. Before I graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy I debated if I wanted to sail on my license or work in a shipyard. I made a decision to sail on my 3rd A/E license after graduation. Fast forward 4.5 years later and I now hold my unlimited Chief Engineer’s license. I’m not saying I know a lot and in fact, there’s quite a lot I don’t know. But, as I reflect on the past 4.5 years at sea, here are a few things I’ve learned along the way: - There is always something new to learn and ways you can grow. Treat every day as a chance to do so. - Nobody likes a know it all. Ask questions, it shows humility. - Don’t limit questions to those above you. You can learn something from everyone - the cadet, the seasoned AB, the QMED’s. - Age is just a number. It doesn’t put limits on what you’re able to do, or where you’re able to go. Your work ethic… or lack thereof… will do that. - The best form of respect is earned and not demanded. - People may not verbally acknowledge your hard work and effort you put in. Don’t let that deter you. Sailing is not a pat on the back business. If no one is ridiculing you, you’re probably doing okay. - Getting seasick happens to everyone at some point, just different points. Weather the storm. Live to fight another day. - Welcome others' suggestions who are more experienced. However, trust in yourself and rely on your strengths. - A ship is only as successful as it’s crew. It’s the most important asset onboard. Take care of your shipmates, not only because they will take care of you - but it’s the right thing to do. - Like any workplace, maintaining healthy coworker relationships is crucial to success. Understand what motivates people, where they’re from, what their family is like, and you might find when you understand them better, you work better together. - Be nice to whoever makes your food and tell them thank you. Self explanatory. - Clean coveralls say a lot. If you have a new pair- dirty them up quick, even if it’s fake. You will get made fun of. - Then again- one clean set is kinda nice. - A good sunrise or sunset can be a great morale boost. Capture them. - Stuff breaks, and when it rains it pours. Roll with it. All you can ever do is your best. - When you lead by example you can accomplish more than you think. Remain steadfast. You’ll be surprised how contagious good leadership is. - A life at sea is not always the healthiest atmosphere. Never forget the importance of sunlight, exercise, water, and a healthy diet. - Work/life balance is important. Communicate to your loved ones as much as you can. Work hard when you’re at work. Relax hard when you’re at home. - Take pride in what you do, and understand you have a very different life than most people. Appreciate what it offers you, and learn to enjoy the little things - a good holiday meal, a swim call, satellite and Wi-Fi signal. Thank you to all of those I’ve sailed with, and those who’ve taught me along the way.

Gotta love a good old oil incident..... I was servicing a car and I didn't check the oil filter sealing surface before putting the new filter on so when I started the car oil squirted out... The method of moving on from mistakes that I like to use and that I teach clients is - what worked, what didn't work and what would I do differently - which I got from my coach What worked - When I start vehicles after working on them I always make sure I can see the ground/ engine incase something happens. Turned the vehicle off straight away. Told myself I am human and humans make mistakes which prevented an emotional spiral What didn't work - Did not check oil filter sealing surface before putting new filter on.
