Australia is a leader in global health and a key supporter of the World Health Organization. It was a real pleasure to meet with Minister Mark Butler during the World Health Assembly #WHA77. We discussed how to drive our WHO reform agenda, and accelerate progress in strategic priority areas: health promotion, tobacco control, climate adaptation for Small Island Development States, and strengthened preparedness. I thanked the Minister for #Australia's flexible funding support, as we discussed the upcoming Investment Round opportunities.

How can the EU maximise its global health impact? The policy brief from the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies on 'European support for improving global health systems and policies' explains why this matters now more than ever. The European Union has a huge impact—and even greater potential—on global health. As one of the world's largest markets, leading aid donors, healthcare innovators, and trading powers, the EU influences global health and health policy both directly and indirectly. Key Messages from the EU Global Health Strategy ✨ 1️⃣ Coherent Approach: There’s a growing recognition that a more unified EU approach to global health could enhance its governance and improve global health policies, driven by the momentum created by COVID-19. 2️⃣ Strategic Principles: The 2022 EU Global Health Strategy and the 2024 Council conclusions outline principles for a future reflecting EU values: better health and well-being across life stages, stronger health systems and actions to prevent and combat health threats. 3️⃣ Synergies: More purposeful efforts are needed to create synergies between EU policy instruments and global health. Coordination across various European Commission directorates, agencies and other EU actors like the External Action Service and European Investment Bank is essential. Five Key Policy Areas for Alignment 🚀 1. Trade in goods and services 2. Public investment and fiscal instruments 3. Official development assistance and humanitarian aid 4. Solidarity, voice, and multilateralism 5. Research and training The EU’s commitment to global health is clear. Now, it’s about leveraging this commitment to create a healthier world for all. #GlobalHealth #EU #HealthPolicy #HealthcareAdvocacy PS: What are your thoughts on the EU’s role in global health? 💜 “We live in a world of many competing priorities, but we need to keep the attention of world leaders on health as the foundation of sustainable development” - Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of World Health Organization, said this week at #UNGA2023 🌎 #HealthForAll ⭐🗝️ In a world where 4.5 billion people - more than half the global population - do not have enough access to essential #health services and almost 2 billion people face financial hardships because of health-related expenses, we welcome key health-centred conclusions of this year’s UN General Assembly: ☑️ The approval of the new Universal Health Coverage declaration 🖋️ ☑️ The pledge to provide universal #healthcoverage for all by 2030 🌐 ☑️ The call to increase financing for #sustainable development to reach $500 billion per year, including #healthcare investments 📈 ☑️ The commitment to conclude negotiations of the Pandemic Cord - agreement on collective pandemic #prevention, preparedness and response - by May 2024 🔬 At All Policies for a Healthy Europe we strongly advocate for #health and #wellbeing of all citizens to be placed at the heart of the 🇪🇺 discussions and #policymaking to foster a successful vision for a healthy and #sustainable Europe by taking a co-creative, collaborative approach 🤝 Read about our policy priorities and recommendations on issues such as #healthliteracy 💡 #digital upskilling 📲 #preventative approach 📊 #resilient systems 🌿 and many more here 👇 https://lnkd.in/eS5p5vhf And keep your eyes peeled for some exciting news from our side soon! 🌠 #WellBeing4All

Despite ambitions for a strong European Health Union, health remains a low priority in the EU Strategic Agenda. This needs to change. At this week's EU Summit, leaders adopted the Strategic Agenda 2024-2029. But where does health stand in this Agenda? The new European Commission must prioritise health. We welcome the Health Council's commitment to public health, health promotion, and disease prevention. Although the new Agenda addresses crises, it lacks a comprehensive strategy for advancing the European Health Union. With non-communicable diseases causing nearly 90% of EU deaths, it's crucial to consider the Health Council's conclusions on mental health, healthy environments, and climate change. 🗣️ “We must prioritise preventive measures, including legislative action, and ensure health equity is at the forefront of our efforts. We cannot afford to overlook these critical aspects if we are to build a resilient and healthy Europe,” says Caroline Costongs. 👉 Health needs to be central in the EU’s Strategic Agenda. This means addressing socioeconomic factors (education, employment, living conditions) and commercial influences (tobacco, ultra-processed food). 👉 A Wellbeing Economy investing in health, social equity, and environmental sustainability is essential for a healthier, more equitable Europe. 🇪🇺 EU #StrategicAgenda 2024-2029 is weak on #PublicHealth: 🗣️”We need policy action that goes beyond healthcare to address the socio-economic (such as education, employment, income, and living conditions) and commercial determinants (such as achieving a tobacco-free Europe and limiting the marketing of ultra-processed food to children).” - EuroHealthNet #CDoH #CommercialDeterminantsOfHealth #SDoH #SocialDeterminantsOfHealth

What Europe needs is a European Commission Vice-President for the Economy of Wellbeing. After the 2024 European elections, a new European Commission will be established, and it will decide on its five-year policy agenda. EuroHealthNet and its Members have used their extensive experience in #PublicHealth and health equity to define what health priorities the #EU should take forward after the 2024 European election. Our main recommendations? ➡️ Appoint a Vice-President for the #EconomyOfWellbeing within the Commission, as an essential and necessary step to ensure high-level attention and coordination of efforts to safeguard the health and wellbeing of both people and the planet. ➡️ Expand the #EuropeanHealthUnion to firmly include health monitoring and action on #HealthEquity, commercial determinants, and #MentalHealth. ➡️ Continue to build on the European Pillar of Social Rights (#EPSR) as a ‘Pillar of Health Equity.’ This includes implementing principle 16 on access to health services and integrating EPSR principles into EU Cohesion Policy Funds. ➡️ Broaden the food portfolio of the next Commissioner for Health and Food (Safety) to include aspects such as healthy nutrition and sustainable #FoodSystems. All the EAC countries as part of the East African Community have Universal Health Coverage and Primary Health Care as key components of their health care system. This is a positive report that confirms that the EAC healthcare service provision visions are aligned. It comprises of a broad mix of health experts working hand in hand to promote UHC and PHC by fostering policy dialogue on strategic planning and health systems governance, developing health financing strategies and supporting their implementation, and enabling effective development cooperation in countries. The support aims to reinforce the leadership of the ministries of health in building resilient and effective health systems that leave no one behind. Treading the path towards UHC requires robust policies, political will and strong capacity of governments to steer the health sector. The provision of quality health services is a desirable outcome, anchored in the UHC framework. The UHC Partnership is supported and funded by the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Union, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, Irish Aid, the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the Government of Japan, the United Kingdom - Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, Belgium, Canada and Germany. #EAC#Health systems strengthening#Healthcare provision#Health promotion#UHC#PHC https://lnkd.in/eVe4KyHS
