Did you know –   • In the UK there are roughly 6000 deaths from suicide each year, of which about 100 are in Derbyshire. This has a ripple effect on families, friends, colleagues, healthcare workers, and the community. • The rates of suicide have not gone down at all in past 15 years and are rising in certain groups. • Men are 3-4 times more likely to die by suicide. Suicide is the highest cause of death in young men. Self-harm is the strongest predictor of later suicide and is now more common in young people. • Primary Care is where 90% of all mental health related consultations take place. We are a looking for someone to make a positive impact on patients’ mental health and become part of a network of Suicide Awareness Facilitators across Derbyshire. The UK Government has recently announced £5 million in funding for mental health support for young people and children nationwide. Studies have shown that around 50% of mental health conditions are established by the time a child reaches the age of 14, making it crucial to have support available at an early age for the child and family. Caring for elderly parents from a distance presents unique challenges but can be managed effectively with the right support. This includes maintaining their independence, ensuring their mental health through social engagement, and looking after their physical well-being. For families, reliable support offers peace of mind, improved relationships, and essential transitional support during emergencies. Off the topic of work does anyone else wonder who is running the mental health services. The last week we have had the trial in Nottingham, the man in Norwich who killed his children, a newspaper heading on how thousands of teenagers have been referred for mental help by their GPs and still waiting and a big mental health hospital in Nottingham had 30 staff including doctors suspended for how the were treating patients. My daughters went to Nottingham Uni and did the same walk home after a night out many times it could have been them. I really felt for those parents - and the poor man driving his van. We hear about people being sectioned but nothing long term is done as there are no resources. The man in Norwich called the police for help an hour before he killed the children and was told to contact medical services. I know mental health is not really the responsibility of the police but having tried to find help for someone with issues in Norfolk in the past I know the police should have known that would go nowhere. A policeman once told me that it required someone going around stabbing people with a knife for mental health services in Norfolk to act. How many more people have to die and how many lives wasted as teenagers sit at home going downhill when they should be living their lives. Even to those cold blooded souls thinking of money it is better they are well and earning . To ordinary people it is just an unnecessary and wrong way to treat people in genuine need of some help and a failure to protect those in some cases sadly at risk from them. Some NHS trusts in the UK are failing to treat up to 60% of children needing mental health support 😔 There are over 250K children waiting for mental health support in the UK. This is not equity or equality. Mental health support is a luxury in the UK. In our first world country. We are failing our kids and young people. Care experienced young people who are living independently and experiencing mental health issues may be the most vulnerable. How can they advocate for themselves? When there is a significant failure in supporting kids who move on to independence in many cases, how can we be sure that these children won’t become another statistic? Those who truly believe they have manifested their success have not experienced true hardship and do not acknowledge their privilege. Being loved and cared for is a privilege too. WHO is going to advocate for our vulnerable members of society? Or will we wait until they become a nuisance before labelling them a product of a failed system? #CaredForChildren #CareExperienced
