The buzzwords “trauma-informed practices” get a lot of ink these days, but we rarely stop to define them. A video explaining what we do. The story behind Soundproofbox CIC begins with the understanding that survivors of domestic abuse, coercive control, and toxic relationships often find it incredibly difficult to share their experiences and be heard. Many times, when they do decide to speak out, their voices are ignored, silenced or brushed aside leading them to feel as if they're desperately shouting through a soundproof box – which is how the organisation got its name. Soundproofbox CIC offers support in three main areas: 1. **Education:** Recognising the importance of breaking the cycle of abuse, the organisation takes a proactive approach by engaging with schools. They conduct interactive theatre productions, workshops, and talks to educate young people about healthy relationships and the signs of abuse. 2. **Workplace:** Soundproofbox CIC acknowledges that for survivors of abuse, the workplace can serve as a safe haven. They advocate for supportive workplaces that empower survivors to break free from abusive situations. The organisation offers training and interactive workshops to help create psychologically safe work environments. 3. **Survivor Hub:** our core focus remains on survivors. They provide free support programmes, help groups, and useful guides that assist survivors in finding the help they need and recovering from the trauma of abuse. 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ We've just performed our 200th play at Seenaryo. I've co-directed or mentored on maybe 20 of them. Many of these 200 plays were directed by celebrated professionals with years of theatre experience. But some of our most talented directors are recent graduates from our training programme, with little prior experience and who come from some of the least-served communities in the Arab region. Making theatre with non-professionals in Lebanon and Jordan isn't just a logistical or fundraising challenge. Every one of those 200 plays was created through a complex negotiation between the directors, the participants, and their dozens of biographical and imaginative stories all jostling to be told. It's a careful process of participatory decision-making and consensus-building. There are safeguarding cases that need careful referral (the reality of working with vulnerable communities), political disagreements that need mediation, and there are participants whose lives will take a different path because of making theatre. In each of the 200 plays, there were probably tears of sadness as participants express the injustice of the world around them; there were possibly tears of frustration at the difficulty of a collaborative creative act between 15+ people; there were certainly tears of joy in the euphoria after performing to an audience. It's a radical, human joy of creating something together then finding yourself where you never expected onstage. If you spread out those shows equally, we'd have done a play every fortnight for eight years. Feeling inspired thinking of the tens of thousands of participants, creatives, coordinators, technicians, drivers, donors and audience members - our community who've made these 200 plays a reality. Addressing Domestic Violence Through Forum Theatre a two year project delivered by Intercultural Roots funded by the Peabody Community Fund External Evaluation & Impact Report Year One - By Claire Burrell. The "Addressing Domestic Violence Through Forum Theatre" project, led by Intercultural Roots and funded by the Peabody Community Fund, has seen remarkable success in its first year. The workshops, expertly facilitated by Drs. Almiro Andrade and Andrea Maciel, have promoted personal growth, relational confidence, and community cohesion. As the project moves into its second year, commencing in late summer, those interested in participating should stay tuned for further information. The full evaluation and impact report by Claire Burrell, along with a related video, provides deeper insights into the project's significant achievements and future potential. ‘The report presents how the pioneering arts for health and social change organisation, Intercultural Roots, are using Forum Theatre (Boal, A.1992) to engage communities in the question; how do we live with violence? The two year project, which is funded by the Peabody Community Fund, is bringing together Peabody Housing tenants and local residents to discuss, express and explore issues of violence and conflict in their lives and local communities. At the conclusion of its first year, the report locates how the Forum Theatre workshops are creating safe spaces and holding secure boundaries for people to recall, enact and consider their subjective and collective concerns. The evaluation brings forward how this creative forum enables participants to refresh their experience of relational connectivity, promoting deeper understanding of how conflict manifests in each others lives and deepening a sense of belonging to community. 10 ways to say "YES" to World Theatre Day: 1. Support your local non-profit and/or educational theatre with your time, talent, and/or energy. 2. Chant out loud: Theatre is life. 3. See a show, live and in person! There's nothing like the common bond of an audience built while watching live theatre. 4. Watch a recorded or streamed theatrical performance on a screen, either at home or in a public venue. 5. Plan a future theatre experience. 6. Read a script, book, or article about theatre. 7. Write your government representatives about the economic and societal values of local theatre. (Americans for the Arts have lots of research if you want or need numbers.) 8. Audition for a show. Be brave. You'll get applause. 9. Volunteer your technical, marketing, organizational, artistic, or other skills for a local production. 10.
