Healthcare Executives 🏥 During my last conversation with Scott Becker we talked about how rural hospitals can attract doctors/specialists by bringing them “back home” to where they grew up or have roots. The story below is about an extremely talented OB/GYN who moved his 30+ year practice, w/4,000 patients to a 50-bed rural hospital that’s closer to where he grew up. Why did he do it? He’ll talk about less bureaucracy, great nurses, more familiarity and one-on-one time w/patients, less hassle for the patients, less hassle for the physicians, and administration/leadership are appreciative and responsive. https://lnkd.in/gpxqMeuQ

For over 1.5 years, in partnership with KSM, Baker Donelson and Bose, I have had the honor to support National, state, regional and local MS Delta hospitals and health systems leadership to assess ways to improve the health systems and health status of the people in the Mississippi Delta. - The infant mortality for Black children in the MS Delta is 2x Mississippi White children and 3x the national average. - The maternal mortality in the MS Delta is 2x the national average. - The rate of Diabetes in the core MS Delta Counties is 3x the national average. - The lower extremity amputation rate is the highest in the nation and over 4x the national average. Although the need for improvement is compelling, the political and race relations are complicated. The 2024 Palliative Care in Queensland Priorities report has seven points of priority for PCQ. Priority 4 focuses on growing initiatives that educate and engage the community to build compassionate communities. Queensland must look to growing community support for people choosing to stay in their own homes or in another community setting throughout their palliative care journey and increasingly at the end of life. "All Mercy Hospitals Rank Among World’s Most Technologically Advanced" Mercy, one of the largest Catholic health systems in the U.S., has earned Stage 7 certification from the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) for all 28 of its inpatient hospitals and critical access locations, placing them among the world’s most technologically advanced health care facilities of their kind. Certification at “HIMSS Stage 7” puts Mercy hospitals in the top 6% of hospitals around the globe related to use of IT and electronic health records (EHR) capabilities. New in Health Services Research from Daniel A Asfaw, Megan Price, Kristina Carvalho, MSW, Steve Pizer, and me: We examined over 3 million specialty care referrals in the VA to evaluate the impact of the VA's 2019 Referral Coordination Initiative on community care referrals and waiting times. We did not observe an effect of the RCI on waiting times or community care referral rates. Logan Regional Medical Center, located in Logan, West Virginia, is crucial to keeping residents in this small community healthy from the moment they are born. At a time when maternal care is disappearing in rural areas, it has three labor suites and a nine-bed nursery. LRMC, along with other rural hospitals across the country, is a cornerstone of the community it serves. Faced with unique challenges, however, these hospitals are dwindling in number -- and proposals by some in Congress threaten to lower their numbers even more. Did you catch the WKYC news segment featuring a community health worker (CHW), Fonda McLaine, and her client, Nadine Head, discussing "Addressing Cardiometabolic Health Inequities by Early Prevention in the Great Lakes Region" (ACHIEVE GreatER)? This research project, funded by the National Institutes of Health, is a multi-stakeholder partnership among Better Health Partnership, Case Western Reserve University, University Hospitals, Wayne State University and the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA), operating in both Cleveland and Detroit. The goal of ACHIEVE GreatER is to reduce cardiovascular complications and hospitalizations for Black patients living in public housing, and who are at risk of heart disease, by improving blood pressure, lipid, and glucose targets. The project, which seeks to determine the impact grassroots efforts can have to address cardiovascular health disparities, pays for community health workers, nurses and care coordinators to work with clients living in CMHA units and coordinate their care with clinical providers and other community resources. Better Health Partnership (BHP) is partnering with University Hospitals to offer a sustainable model for funding CHWs beyond the 5-year grant cycle via the Better Health Pathways HUB.
