I will be at the Hinterland conference tomorrow, joining a panel discussion about startup-corporate collaboration and how we can build more effective innovation ecosystems in Europe. Under the current economic climate, a lot of centralization and efficiency programs also impact enterprises’ ability to drive and to grow from innovation. While efficiency is a prerequisite (and we still have work to do there in our economy), I am convinced we need to get much better leveraging the strengths of our decentralized ecosystem, our Mittelstand and our talent. If we want back to the top, we need to reinvigorate our builder’s spirit and grow from building new things - not just squeezing the old and looking at others that we should and could not mimic anyways. As many MDHUB Members are re focusing on developing their Sustainability thinking and strategies post pandemic ,this incredibly well curated and inclusive event held by TEAM LEWIS at The British Library last night was very timely and inspiring. Just brilliant to reconnect with MDHUB Alumni Sarah Ogden after 14 years who seamlessly and graciously hosted the evening. You did good. Key themes that I took away for Leaders for the SME community from the brilliant contributors last night - as per the post below - are : * You need to meet with the people in your organisation who may already have " zoned out on sustainability " at the " confluence of Culture and Zeitgeist " and work with them to get them re engaged . * How do you do that ? Make it Fun and then reveal The Why ?- with fascinating and important facts that underpin your purpose and strategy. * Check and double check that your team are all on board with the moral compass of your team in regard to Sustainability - a true understanding of what " your North Star " is ....before announcing to the wider world. * If you have got to the point that you are prepared to " go live" with your Sustainability Strategy ,make sure that your team are incredibly well prepared for reactions and potential backlash when your social media might " light up " - you need to feel really comfortable with your messaging as a business before putting your neck on the line . * Recognising and acknowledging that Big Change requires persistence and that influencing policy makers will take time as politics is slow. * Focus on the Metrics that really matter for your team and your organisation. * The nature of Sustainability is a " bit awkward " but it is this awkwardness that can lead to innovation and change. * Let's work on "progress and not perfection " with Sustainability . It was a really great and concise discussion - well thought out, well briefed and informative - Thank you .

Two weeks have passed since the B Corp Cork event on June 13th, and we've been reflecting on its success and impact. The event, co-hosted by Climeaction, Otonomee, Change by Degrees and B Lab Ireland, took place at The Dean Hotel and served as an exciting platform for innovation in the Irish business community. We are thankful to everyone who attended and helped make our vision of Raising the Collective Ambition in the Room a reality. The event was packed with insightful discussion and shared enthusiasm, highlighting the growing momentum of the B Corp movement in Ireland. James McManus spoke passionately about the workings, accomplishments, and significance of B Corps. Marcello Palazzi inspired us to step up our ambitions and engage with B Corps on a global scale. Numerous companies from various sectors, sizes, and stages of maturity shared their sustainability journeys, reinforcing our shared commitment to positive change. After two weeks of reflection, we can highlight a few key takeaways from the day: Companies are expanding their definition of stakeholders to include workers, customers, communities, and the environment. Being a certified B Corp is a marker of good business, showcasing awareness and solutions for societal and business challenges. It’s not enough to get your own house in order; responsible businesses make a difference by supporting others on their journey. Purpose-driven and sustainable businesses are setting themselves apart and succeeding commercially and financially. B Corps take pride in ensuring their products, practices, and profits do no harm and benefit all. The success of this event has set the stage for more exciting initiatives.
