Gamesight was a pretty scrappy team two years ago — scrappier than we are now. Our team's leaders, Adam Lieb, Anthony Kinson, Mark Davis, and just about anyone with a pulse who could lend a hand, were working around the clock to execute 15 influencer campaigns, laying the foundation of what would become a cornerstone in the industry. 🚀 ⏩ Fast forward to today: we've executed 35 campaigns this fall alone, have 19 in prep, launched 5 last week, and another 5 set to go live this week. How does a super-powered startup launch so many campaigns? Kadijah F.: Our newest member, I call her R.O.Y., already taking on big names like Ubisoft and Square Enix… she's the rookie of the year. Cat Szelkowski: Customer horticulturist. "Without fandom, there isn't any licensing!" Reza Izad's answer to an interview question by Total Licensing Ltd is a great line and a good litmus test for anyone working with influencers. Reza's answer in the article below continued: "There are creators that have mastered publishing to an algorithm, which is not necessarily a true fan base. For a licensing brand to be successful, it needs to understand the science of fandom and assess if the creator's passionate fan base is real or if the creator simply knows how to create content to play the algorithm, and that is the real name of the game. In my experience, if the creator does not have a truly loyal fanbase, the licensed product will not usually succeed." Substitute any influencer partnership model for "licensing," and the same is true. Whether you're a brand partnering with influencers to appear in content on their channels or investing in their consumer products, fandom is everything. It reminds me of a call in 2016 from a literary agent friend. He represented an influencer client with millions of YouTube subscribers who couldn't sell any of her books. Looking at her massive YouTube views and desirable demographics of W25-34 core fans, he was sure books would sell. Only that didn't happen. Crowds didn't show up at signing events either. The launch was a dud. He didn't realize, and her team didn't acknowledge, that the primary audience for her videos were 8-10-year-olds who watched YouTube on their parents' accounts. The problem was that she didn't write a children's book. And she didn't promote the book on her channel because she knew her fans wouldn't understand. So, it's no surprise that her book didn't sell. It was common back then to have mismatched expectations based on YouTube demographics when analytics platforms were less advanced. To evaluate influencers for potential partnerships now, we can go deeper than surface metrics to analyze average view duration, completion rate, engagement rate, % of views from shares, sentiment analysis of the comments, and much more. Prior to working within the influencer marketing industry, I had the common misconception that being an influencer meant six figure brand deals and a life of internet fame. It turns out, the reality is quite different with 88% of full time influencers making less than $50,000 a year. So for me, when I started working at Pearpop, my perspective changed drastically.
