🚢 Unveiling CERN’s knowledge transfer 2023 highlights - A collaboration between GTT (Gaztransport & Technigaz) and CERN to enable liquid hydrogen maritime transportation In 2023, CERN and GTT, embarked on a journey to develop an innovative way of transporting liquid hydrogen across the sea. The ambition of this project is to provide a scalable technological solution to store and carry liquid hydrogen and thus to contribute to the emerging sustainable hydrogen supply chain by linking producers and consumers around the globe. The design of the insulating containment system is one of the most challenging and innovative parts of the project. Hydrogen has great potential as a non-polluting energy source but its transport is challenging. For long distance transport, one of the options is to liquify the hydrogen, which requires it to be stored at very low temperatures in a completely leak-proof tank.   CERN's competencies in materials, cryogenics and leak-tightness can support industry in developing innovative technical solutions. CERN is providing its expertise and facilities to support GTT to develop material specifications, optimised designs and welding procedures compatible with the stringent safety and reliability requirements imposed by liquid hydrogen long-term storage. Highlights : •First demonstration of a Water Electrolysis fuelled Hall Effect Thruster. •Oxidation studies when using oxygen and hydrogen plasmas. •Performance comparison between a krypton-fuelled and a hydrogen-fuelled cathode. •Thrust, specific impulse, anode efficiency and total efficiency metrics. •Influence of the water electrolysis stoichiometric ratio on the performance. Abstract This study presents the first experimental demonstration of a Hall Effect Thruster operating with water electrolysis-derived constituents: oxygen for the anode (thruster) and hydrogen for the cathode, both from pressurised bottles. In contrast to prior research where the thruster was operated with oxygen to the anode and xenon/krypton to the cathode, this investigation uses an advanced set-up that safely allowed the combined use of pressurised oxygen and hydrogen. Firstly, a comparative assessment between the established plasma filament cathode (utilised in previous research) and a novel 𝐿𝑎𝐵6  cathode (referred to as Hydrocat), both krypton-fuelled, is conducted. Results show a different IV curve for these cathodes, but negligible disparities in thruster performance for fixed discharge power and anode mass flow. Thrust, anode specific impulse, thrust-to-power ratio, and both, anode and total efficiency of the system using oxygen (anode) and hydrogen (cathode) are then presented and compared against oxygen (anode) and krypton (cathode). The cathode successfully operated on hydrogen, with a reduction in thrust performance of under 10% compared to when krypton is used as the cathode propellant. This performance difference can be attributed to different factors, such as the reduced efficiency of the cathode running with hydrogen due to a higher ionisation potential and the cathode propellant’s contribution to thrust, more significant when using heavier propellants such as xenon/krypton compared to hydrogen. The impact of changing the hydrogen-to-oxygen ratio is also assessed and shown to have no impact on the thruster’s performance. The most optimal performance was obtained at the highest discharge power tested (𝑃𝑑=1953±1 W), using a hydrogen:oxygen ratio of 𝛷= 1:25. According to estimates by the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI), the domestic demand for High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) in the United States could exceed 600 metric tons by 2035. This need is not limited to the U.S., as many European and Asian countries also require HALEU for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). ⚡ Keynote on Hydrogen-Assisted Processing for Advanced Materials at MH2024 ⚡ Our team member, Imants Dirba, is heading to Saint-Malo, France, to participate in the 18th International Symposium on Metal-Hydrogen Systems (MH2024) from 26-31 May 🧳 His invited talk will present our most exciting recent developments in using hydrogen in the processing of advanced functional materials 💡 Hydrogen is often and wrongly associated with the infamous Hindenburg airship tragedy or, on the positive side, as an energy carrier and important player in the decarbonization of the energy sector. In the talk, Imants will show that hydrogen is also a very effective and versatile tool to modify many intrinsic and extrinsic properties of modern materials.
