Data leaders - work at the pace of your organization. All too often, you will end up on an analytics project or system implementation to see the writing on the wall that the project is doomed months or EVEN years before it is slotted to be finished. OR with some minor tweaks, can move even faster! Rather than say the obvious and become collateral damage or be seen as a know-it-all or cynic - could you celebrate the wins occurring and give suggestions when asked? One of the best data architects I have ever worked with was masterful at this. No one was unimportant; he would do his best to patiently provide possible paths forward and raise gaps while taking ownership of what he didn't know. Detach a little when you recognize a project is headed in the wrong direction. It's OK if data quality suffers, it's OK if the business picks the wrong technology, and it's OK if your organization needs more time to be ready to be successful with the change. Eventually, the organization will get there. Your vision is clear. The organization may be willing, but please be patient with your stakeholders and the process!

I thoroughly enjoyed yesterday's productive Steering Commitee meeting of the Competence Center Corporate Data Quality, specifically our deep-dive into federated data & analytics governance in multinationals and the excellent input for shaping our research agenda for 2024 🚀 With our esteemed Steering Committee members, we delved into the fresh results of our study on data & analytics governance. Key takeaways included: 1️⃣ three complementary governance approaches—master data, operations-oriented, and analytics-oriented data governance. 2️⃣ the evolution from hub-and-spoke to hub-hub-spoke models, enabling federated governance across divisions, regions, and functions. 3️⃣ the pivotal role of a global team or Chief Data Office in orchestrating the growing networks of data users and consumers. We also reviewed the achievements in our three co-innovation groups: 🖋 Data products led by M Redwan Hasan, CAPM®: our data product library continues to grow, and the group worked on the data product lifecycle with roles and metrics. 🖋 Data excellence for sustainability led by Elizabeth A. Teracino, Ph.D.: as sustainability objectives and regulations are key drivers for data management, the group instantiated the Data Excellence Model for sustainability and developped a maturity assessment. 🖋 Scaling data & analytics governance led by Hippolyte Lefebvre and Markus E.: the process maps for data management and analytics have been updated, along with job profiles for data stewards and data product owners. Understanding your organization’s analytical maturity can give you a strong edge as a data professional. It will make your “non-analytical” decisions better informed (from “project prioritization” to “how to present your findings”) and help you formulate a long-term goal. And that’s truly an edge — not a lot of data professionals are taking this step back to design long-term goals (and even fewer are delivering against these long-term goals).

#data professionals, I need your help! My colleagues (Dylan C, Jessica Hewes, Bhushan M., Dedrick Siddall) and I are working on some data governance & enablement projects, and we're trying to determine how we can measure / quantify the value of this work. Measuring the value of data analytics *products* is not necessarily easy -- but it's a bit more straightforward. I dropped some common ways of measuring their value in the image below. But quantifying the return on strategic & programmatic work such as -building & implementing governance frameworks -creating data stewardship policies/programs -building a data culture and organizational data fluency -analytics project portfolio management ....isn't as straight forward.
