"In the end... it doesn't even matter" This is what we DID NOT discuss during the two-day regional conference on women in tourism in Asia and the Pacific, which was hosted by UN Tourism in collaboration with Politeknik Pariwisata Bali and the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy in Bali, Indonesia. We hosted the FIRST all-women ministers' panel, and you know what was wilder? We did not ask them how they balance home and work! Surprisingly our panel still went well! 😉 We also had three panels discussing sustainability and women's role in inclusion, education and training of women in tourism, and safety and accessiblity of women as different stakeholders - and ALL of the speakers were women! Apart from it being historic, there were several points which were reiterated through the discussions - 1. Gender matters - and anyone telling otherwise has different views of the world. It matters when we make decisions inside and outside of workplaces, it matters when we make choices of careers and family, and it definitely matters when we want to take that next step in life (whatever that next step looks for anyone). 2. Society influences matters - who we are, whom we become, and how we will live has a huge impact on the social structure we live in. This is especially true for Asia and the Pacific, where we have deeply collectivist societies. This also means that for any policy/training/scheme to work, it needs to be socioculturally informed. 3. Structural changes don't always need to come from the government - we had a very good conversation with Neneng Goenadi on a panel I was hosting, where she shared how the policies at Grab Indonesia is leading the policy change which is different than what the government mandates, and is changing how women stay and progress at Grab! This discussion also reminded me of the discussion by Parmesh Shahani in his book where he talks about corporate activism and how corporates can lead the discourses where government is taking time to come around. So, yes, in the end, it does matter. The gender, the society, the social structure, the collectivist influence - all of it. That's it. That's the #diversiTea

Well, sisters, get this: -> Thailand has the highest proportion of female CEOs in the world, with 30 percent of companies employing female CEOs! -> China's rocking it too, with 19%, while the rest of us are catching up (9% EU, 5% US). But hold on, ladies, before you pack your bags for Bangkok😅, this isn't just a Thai thing. It's a global revolution of women claiming their crowns, redefining power suits, and rewriting the boardroom narrative. We're breaking down doors, not heels;) So ditch that imposter syndrome and become that woman who leads with fire in her eyes and grace in her stride. Who knows, maybe next year, those numbers will have us all saying "Move over, Thailand!" Because the future? It's ours to rule. Remember, a successful woman is one who can build a firm foundation with bricks others have thrown at her. Agree?

👑 Being a woman founder is so easy. It's easy to feel overwhelmed and doubt yourself, to feel like you don't quite belong. Those who are leading teams of 20+, 50+, generating significant revenue, and balancing it all between business and family. 3️⃣ It's about receiving valuable feedback and insights from judges that spark discussions within our business development team.   All of this positive, incredible energy is worth more than any trophy. The room was buzzing with anticipation as I began to unravel the layers of this crucial dialogue. In a world where diversity is not just a buzzword but a necessity, empowering women isn't just the right thing to do; it's the smart thing to do. Study after study has shown that diverse teams outperform homogeneous ones. And yet, women continue to be underrepresented in leadership roles and decision-making processes. During my session, I shared insights gleaned from years of navigating the corporate landscape as a woman. For the last week, I have been travelling across Indonesia and visiting our customers and sales reps in far away villages and there was something very positive that I wanted to share. In my visit, I met around 4 or 5 businesses that had women owners. In the operations, they were supported by their husbands and in some cases their fathers. None of the men for one second claimed superiority or tried to assert the slightest of dominance. They very clearly acknowledged who the boss was and let her do all the talking. There was no mansplaining, no interference in her conversation and not for one second depriving the women of their due credit in running a pretty large business. They patiently waited for the lady to come into the office, sit at the owner’s chair and take the centre stage while they sat at a chair beside her. Now, that is a lesson in women empowerment! A lesson from obscure villages of Indonesia. In a world where we hear so many stories of how women startup founders are treated as second fiddle and they have to constantly prove their worth in coporate boardrooms, this is a refreshing change and an eye opener.
