A few years ago, I had the opportunity to interview a group of incredible Latina leaders as a part of my dissertation research. After a decade of climbing the corporate ladder myself, I was eager to explore a question that always loomed in the back of my mind –  “why aren’t there more of us here?” 🔍 I dove deep into conversations with women who had reached senior executive levels, examining the journey they took to get there. More on my detailed findings later, but one thing that comes up for me as we recognize Women’s History Month is that 100% of my study participants emphasized that mentorship and sponsorship were key to their path to leadership. Without the support of a mentor/sponsor the road to leadership is foggy at best. However, finding the right mentor can be a challenge. My first corporate job matched me with a mentor through a formal mentorship program. But, I couldn't relate to them personally, and I didn't feel comfortable sharing parts of my identity. I felt as though they didn’t know what it was like to be a daughter of immigrants and a first-gen college graduate. I questioned whether they would even understand how my cultural values were often in conflict with what was expected of me at work. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to stay in touch with the women from my study. It's a treat to witness their commitment to paying it forward, as they have created safe spaces for me to learn and grow (without judgment) and continue to act as mentors/sponsors as I navigate my own leadership journey. My biggest takeaway → Having mentors who can relate to your experiences and can guide you in an authentic way is gold. ✨ A big thanks to my alma mater University of Southern California for creating the space for mentorship and inviting me to serve as a mentor at this year's Women’s Conference. 🎉 I may not have all the answers, but hopefully showing up and sharing my own experiences helped someone else’s path become more clear. “I almost didn’t come. I’m glad I did.” This was a common sentiment I heard from several leaders at the Chief event I joined last night in Boston. The event was an opportunity for business founders and executives in transition to come together to connect with women in related roles who share common goals and leadership challenges.
