Agricarbon's Role in the ArcZero Project: Leading Agriculture Towards Net Zero Agricarbon's soil carbon measurement service has proved integral to the ArcZero project, a pioneering initiative demonstrating that agriculture in Northern Ireland can achieve and even surpass net zero emissions. Agriculture, accounting for about 27% of the region's greenhouse gas emissions, plays a vital role in meeting the Climate Change Act (2022) targets. The project, initiated in April 2021, has already shown that farms manage substantial carbon stocks. Agricarbon's involvement in deep soil sampling, reaching depths of 1m, has been crucial in accurately quantifying these stocks. This project's additional partnerships include auditing emissions and leveraging Lidar technology for above-ground carbon measurement. The work has led to a significant discovery: the seven farms involved in the project store over 515,000 tonnes of carbon in soil and above ground. This result underscores the potential of agriculture in carbon management and its critical role in environmental sustainability. Agricarbon remains committed to providing data-driven solutions and expertise, proving that sustainable farming is not only compatible with but essential to achieving net zero goals. The results of the ArcZero project on the participating farms are quite remarkable. Two of the seven farms had already achieved net-zero status, meaning they were capturing more carbon than they were emitting. Specifically, Patrick Casement's farm achieved a net emission reduction of 56 tonnes of CO2e/year, and John Gilliland's farm achieved a net emission reduction of 4 tonnes of CO2e/year, indicating significant carbon sequestration beyond their emissions. The remaining five farms also made substantial reductions in their carbon emissions. For example, Ian McClelland's farm reduced emissions by 13% between 2021 and 2023, and Hugh Harbison's farm achieved a 4% reduction in the same period. These results suggest that most of these farms are well on track to meet (or exceed) Northern Ireland's net zero targets within the projected timelines.
