Sharing data and insights - listening and learning 👉 Challenges and opportunities in feedstock supply and Chemical Recycling... Two crucial fields for the future of packaging and circular materials were highlighted at back to back AMI conferences this week in Brussels. **Feedstocks**: CEFLEX shared results from a multi-country compositional analysis to research the type and amount of flexible packaging and rigid plastic packaging in the post-consumer waste stream 🚮 The research is providing valuable data to understand the collection, sorting and recycling infrastructure needed in each country and helping value chain and EPR collaborate together 💡 It shows the impact of a well-established, consistent and comprehensive collection system for recyclables; opportunities to better sort and recycle 40-60% of 'ready to recycle' mono-materials from the residual waste stream; and for continued progress in sustainable design. Great presentations, including an overview of Green Dot actions from Alexandre Dangis - including their tie up with Plastic Energy - and AMI consultant Elizabeth Carroll amongst others. 👩🔬 ♻ **Chemical recycling** is a key lever for food and contact sensitive packaging - which makes up nearly 50% of flexible packaging. Discussions are in full sway, including a panel today with Dana Mosora, Sander Defruyt and Raphaël Jaumotte on the future place, pace and development of chemical recycling in Europe and beyond. Thanks to Silke Einschuetz, Olivia Poole and team for keeping speed on the development pipeline and context for wide-scale deployment of planned investments in Europe, US and Asia. #MissionCircular #Recycling #PlasticRecycling

The plastic recycling show - Middle East and Africa (PRS ME&A) was a valuable opportunity for me to learn about the latest developments and innovations in the plastics recycling industry. The event was the first and only one of its kind in the region, and it attracted a diverse and high-level audience of stakeholders from across the plastics value chain. I was impressed by the quality and variety of the exhibition, which showcased the latest solutions and technologies available on the market. I also enjoyed the conference, which featured international experts who addressed key themes such as circular economy, regulations, challenges, opportunities, trends and best practices in the sector. I gained a lot of insights and knowledge from the presentations and discussions, and I also had the chance to network with other professionals and exchange ideas and experiences. Some of the highlights of the event for me were: - The keynote speech by Dr. Abdullah Belhaif Al Nuaimi, Minister of Climate Change and Environment of the United Arab Emirates, who emphasized the importance of plastics recycling for achieving environmental sustainability and economic diversification in the region. - The panel discussion on "The role of plastics recycling in achieving a circular economy in the Middle East and Africa", which explored the opportunities and challenges of implementing circular economy principles in the region, and highlighted some of the successful initiatives and projects that are underway. - The presentation by Dr. Steve Wong, Executive President of China Scrap Plastics Association, who shared his insights on "The impact of China's waste import ban on global plastics recycling markets", which explained how the ban has affected the supply and demand dynamics of plastics scrap, and how it has created new opportunities for other regions to develop their own recycling capacities. - The demonstration by Erema Group, one of the leading suppliers of plastic recycling machinery and equipment, who showcased their innovative Intarema® technology, which enables high-quality recycling of post-consumer and post-industrial plastic waste with minimal energy consumption and emissions. Overall, I found the PRS ME&A to be a very informative and beneficial event for anyone involved or interested in plastics recycling. I think it was a great platform to raise awareness and promote collaboration among the various stakeholders in the region. I look forward to attending the next edition of the event in 2025.

SOL-REC 2: Pioneering Sustainable Solutions for Complex Material Recycling ♻️ Food packaging is crucial in reducing food waste, but it often ends up in landfills due to recycling complexities. SOL-REC 2 is changing that narrative by focusing on multi-material recycling and innovative sorting techniques. The Sol-Rec 2 Project is making remarkable strides in addressing the challenges of plastic recycling and sustainable food packaging. Dr.Kranthi Maniam, CSci, CEng, a Senior Project Leader of Technology at TWI, recently presented findings from the European Commission-funded project at the CIRCULAR FoodPack Conference in Germany. His insightful presentation showcased the significant technical achievements and industry benefits of the SOL-REC 2 project, focusing on food packaging and demonstrating a critical step forward in addressing the challenges of plastic recycling and sustainable packaging. The event at the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV in Germany was a hub for discussing circularity in the food packaging sector. TWI has collaborated on this significant project with Solvionic, Mikrolin, Plastigram Industries a.s., AIMPLAS · Technological Institute of Plastics, Materials Innovation Centre (MatIC), University of Leicester and FiliGrade Sustainable Watermarks. Turning challenges into opportunities: the journey in plastics recycling ♻ Around the world, the problem of improperly disposed plastic waste is becoming increasingly evident, causing negative impacts that affect us all. However, while we face this challenge, it is important to remember that polymers play a vital role in our society, with numerous applications covering sectors such as mobility, health, real estate, food and even leisure. In view of this, it is crucial to find sustainable ways of keeping these essential materials in our lives. Our aim is to transform the current linear plastics economy into a circular economy. I recently had the opportunity to delve deeper into this topic during a two-day seminar on plastic recycling. The event, held at the prestigious Institute of Polymeric Materials and Testing at Johannes Kepler Universität Linz, not only gave me a deeper understanding of polyolefins and their recycling process, but also opened my eyes to a promising approach that has not yet been explored as much: the mechanical recycling of plastics. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. DI Dr.mont. Jörg Fischer and his team - DI Moritz Mager, DI in Johanna Langwieser, Clemens Pühringer, and Ing. Alexander Lovas - for organizing such an enriching seminar. I must also thank the AEE INTEC and my team colleagues - DI (FH) Christian Platzer, DI in Dr. in Bettina Muster-Slawitsch, and Bsc. arianna quintana - for sharing the vision that plastic waste can be turned into real opportunities. Ultimately, the issue of plastic waste is not just a problem, but an opportunity to rethink our processes, adopt more sustainable practices and build a future in which polymers continue to contribute to humanity's progress in a responsible and environmentally conscious way. #CircularEconomy #PlasticRecycling #Sustainability #EnvironmentalInnovation #JKU #IPMT #AEEINTEC #TeamWork #TransformingChallengesIntoOpportunities
