***National Doctor's Day*** I just read a sad post on doctors who commit suicide. 300-400 per year. I know of a lady doctor who got Covid during the pandemic. She recovered, and committed suicide later... it is incomprehensible as she could see it was possible to recover. We would like to think that would be encouraging. Maybe she felt Guilt over living while not saving lives of others, I don't know. It is a common consideration in medical training that if your patient dies, it is your failure ... so guilt. This means thousands of people don’t get the help that they need for very real, and even life-threatening illnesses like an eating disorder. In today’s episode I speak to Emily Anderson, Marriage and Family Therapist from PsychED Recovery, who serves as a holistic and healthy model of what it is like to be a provider in a larger body. Emily’s mission is to create a safe, inclusive, accessible space for all clients of all identities and body types to heal from the underlying causes of their eating disorder. Her goal is to empower clients to embrace their bodies and radically and unapologetically take up space in the world. One of our 5 Philosophies of Care at Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless is harm reduction. We infuse everything we do with this philosophy, which is basically that everyone has the right to autonomy - to make their own decisions - and our role is very simply to help folks make decisions to reduce their harm. That's it. As I continue to build my clinical practice, I've leaned heavily on The Curbsiders Addiction Medicine podcast, which is an excellent source of clinical information, presented through the lens of harm reduction.
