July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month! Let’s take time to reflect on the specific challenges to mental health that racial and ethnic minorities face and what we can do to address these challenges in our lives and workplaces. Factors like stigma, insurance access, and the struggle to find culturally competent providers play a huge role in racial mental health care disparities; our role is vital in addressing these! This month, let’s commit to understanding these barriers and working towards mental health equity and a more just world. #MinorityMentalHealth

How can health system boards make behavioral health a priority? By focusing on the mental health of people, patients and communities, health systems can play a critical role in driving meaningful change. "It is imperative that board members of hospitals and health care organizations prioritize and address mental health in their communities. By proactively monitoring and assessing the mental health needs of the community, board members can ensure that available resources are effectively leveraged to provide accessible and high-quality mental health services. They must collaborate with local stakeholders and promote innovative solutions to effectively address the growing mental health challenges in communities." -Arpan Waghray , MD, CEO, Providence's Well Being Trust Learn more: http://ms.spr.ly/6042YoZLY #healthcareleaders #mentalhealth #behavioralhealth

May is recognized as National Mental Health Awareness Month. Over 50 million Americans, adults and youth, suffer from mental illness and have little access to health care professionals, leading to continued emotional and behavioral health needs, and an increasing number of suicides each year. This is where our Crisis Care and Behavioral Health services come in. As a national leader in telemedicine, our mission is to collaborate with local clinicians and law enforcement so we can provide high quality care when and where it's needed. We know that we need to address the “pair of aces” by building community well-being, interdependence, resilience, and safety. Community based solutions for complex problems is a thread I’m hearing today. What belongs at the state level and what can be embedded and funded in the community?
Oregon Health and Education Collaborative Executive Director Chelsea King is attending the State of Reform Health Policy Conference, participating in conversation about substance use disorder, houselessness, mental health crisis and healthcare workforce issues. The issues are complex and it’s going to take cross sector partnership to address these challenges. There are smart folks tackling issues, so keep the hope. OHEC’s #UpstreamInitiative is designed to create solutions that live in the community, in a cross-sector manner, to get ahead of the trauma and adverse experiences that lead to these downstream issues.

Mental health care is often expensive, particularly for individuals barely managing their day-to-day lives. Our laws don't always provide sufficient funding for mental health accommodation and care. Isn't it high time our hospitals and government step up to offer the necessary support? Without this, both patients and their caregivers face lifelong struggles. #MentalHealthAwareness #HealthcareReform #SupportAndCare

Read about a framework that describes public health’s role in mental health promotion and suicide prevention that is centered in fairness and justice and serves as a guide for public health programmatic and policy strategies. The intent of this framework is to help public health practitioners in communicating their role in mental health promotion and suicide prevention with multi-sector partners.
