Visit Healthcare Careers U.S. News & World Report released its list of the 2024 Best Jobs, offering insights into the top career options across 17 different categories, including healthcare. Among the notable findings, the position of physical therapist has been ranked # 7 in the Best Health Care Jobs category, a slight decline from its # 3 position in the 2023 rankings, and it holds the # 30 spot among the 100 Best Jobs overall. The survey highlights that the profession of physical therapy offers significant flexibility in terms of alternative work schedules and work-life balance, along with above-average potential for salary growth and career advancement but with a higher-than-average level of stress compared to other occupations. Overall, occupational therapists secured the # 4 position in the Best Health Care Jobs category for 2024 and ranked # 19 among the 100 Best Jobs overall. Speech-language pathologists claimed the # 3 spot in the Best Health Care Jobs category and stood at # 10 in the overall ranking of the 100 Best Jobs for the year. How to dispel hiring manager fear as a therapist. I’m sure many of us have all been in this similar situation. The hiring manager is an RN or worse they are not clinical at all! As a therapist PT/OT/SLP etc we have very niche skills and a unique role we play in healthcare. Our uniqueness can be our down fall or our saving grace. When the hiring manager sees we are not like them the fear starts to creep in. Can this person handle the job? Do they even have any relatable skills? I don’t really know what they actually do? This makes me uncomfortable I’ll just move to the next candidate. So how can we as therapists combat this? 1. Don’t use discipline specific jargon instead use role specific jargon and speak their language don’t try and make them understand yours. 2. Talk about your experiences as a therapist and make sure to draw linear comparisons to the specific role you’ve applied for. If you bring up patient assessments that needs to be tied to selecting appropriate process measures. If you talk about goal setting this can be tied to meeting benchmarks for projects or quality measures. Getting the idea? Good. 3. Don’t act like you know it when you don’t. Let’s face it we are “experts” in our respective fields and sometimes carry that mentality into interviews for roles we truly know little about. It’s important to take a step back, ask genuine questions and do not attempt to overcompensate for lack of non-clinical experience. If you’re looking for a role change. This is a serious warning for all OT, PT, and SLP therapists on my feed! As a fellow therapist, I must strongly advise against working for the contract therapy company - Step Up Rehab. I had the unfortunate experience of being under their direct leadership at Solaris Health Lake Zephyr in August of 2023. Step Up Rehab imposes and STRICTLY enforces unattainable productivity requirements on their therapy assistants, exceeding 90%, in the skilled nursing facility setting. The upper management of this company sets productivity requirements to unattainable levels, knowingly forcing therapists to hold group and concurrent treatments to cut costs, disregarding the clinical judgment of therapists and the patients individual needs. This not only harms our vulnerable patients and seniors but also creates an environment of intimidation, bullying and abuse. After six years in the industry, I’ve worked in nursing homes/SNFs across Florida and New Jersey and I have ONLY encountered what I can confidently deem as "unethical" contract therapy companies and therapy management firms. Their upper management teams have developed and implemented a productivity scheme deliberately designed to exploit therapists and deprive patients of quality treatments to cut costs. Given these unethical practices, I am compelled to share my resignation letter in my next post with the building administrator who was utilizing Step Up Rehab as a vendor or contract therapy company.
