For the first time in many years, students graduating from psychiatric-mental health programs have a new choice in certification exams. The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board has introduced a PMHNP certification and will administer its first PMHNP exams this spring. California NPs! We have another hurdle to face for potential Full Practice Authority (FPA). Did you know that some of California's most experienced and qualified nurse practitioners are not eligible to become 103 NPs because their national certifications have been "retired?" I am one of these NPs. The board certification I took, "Adult NP," doesn't exist anymore with AANP. I still have to maintain all of my current licensure, CEUs, board requirements, etc., but AANP retired this particular exam. So the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) has identified these kinds of board certifications as "legacy certifications" and, as such, they are not recognized as potential 103 NPs. These are some of the most experienced and qualified NPs, so this does not make sense!
