So honored to have been a small part of this expansive discussion with my people, the Society for Features Journalism! One of the fantastic questions we got was: how do you transfer your journalism skills to your post-journalism roles? Here's how I think about this: Although I'm not officially a journalist anymore, I still summon my inner reporter every day. For example, when I'm working with a new client, I'm like a general assignment reporter who can quickly assess the challenge at hand and get up to speed on an unfamiliar subject. I get to dive head-first into research, ask permission to talk to everyone, and then ask everyone a ton of questions. And follow-up questions. And when that's done, "just one more thing..." and "could you clarify what you meant when..." questions. Or when I'm helping my clients connect with their audiences, I'm like a features writer pitching stories that peek behind the curtain and uncover surprising details. I get to be on the scene with my sources and record firsthand accounts and insights. And I get to work with awesome photogs to bring these stories to life. And I'm ~always~ an editor. I help brands structure and refine their big ideas. I help them establish their unique voice and adhere to a set of standards that I help them create. And most of all, I help them to be useful to their audiences. We like to tell our clients that good storytelling gives audiences something to talk about, think about, or do. Who better than journalists to lead these efforts? We're naturally curious. We're trained to ask the right questions and to craft compelling narratives that resonate with people. Our skills in research, interviewing, and storytelling are invaluable to brands.  Just look at my fellow panelists!! Allison Linn, Susanna Ray, Ben R., Hsiao-Ching Chou, Gina Cole ... These folks bring immense value to their companies. The brands they work for would not look the same without them. So to everyone who came to our talk, know this: Your skills are more valuable than ever and there are countless ways to apply them in this ever evolving media landscape. Great advice here in this list of webinar highlights from Society for Features Journalism President Laura Coffey. There are so many ways journalists and those moving into other careers can use their storytelling skills!

I am so grateful to have been able to attend this webinar yesterday about Life After Journalism--the perspectives, experiences, and advice shared by the panelists were so valuable. The post linked below does a fabulous job of recapping key takeaways. One that resonates most with me is #2: remember your superpowers. I may not (yet) have corporate/brand/agency background, but have a ton of experience writing, editing, interviewing, synthesizing complex material, being curious, and doing research. The gem of encouragement I took away was one panelist's comment that a large pool of applicants for the kinds of jobs many of us are looking for surely has many with the more traditional corporate/brand/agency experience, far fewer who have the skill sets journalists bring to the company. A great reminder to focus more on that going forward with job searching.

Since 2021, our Media and Journalism Research Center Financial Support program has aided independent media outlets in autocracies to achieve sustainability. The results are mixed. During the meet and greet on Nov. 16, there was a fascinating discussion evoking narrative disruption by Joseph Green, and about the book The View from Somewhere by Lewis Raven Wallace, as well as suggestions to have more community gatherings to discuss the dissemination of our hyperlocal information. There was an interesting offer to organize a benefit concert to help fund our new independence. Author/artist Sierra Stevens kicked off the evening by reading a passage from our yearly zine she produced entirely, describing a role model who helped turn her difficult local childhood around. This was followed by a lively back and forth conversation which flowed for over an hour, within the colorful, cozy confines of our gracious hosts at the Radical Cat Cafe. Thank you to all who attended, including some who have been on this journey with us since the beginning while the documentary Invisible Girl was filmed, (whose hero, now an accomplished young woman, was also present), those who asked questions and to our all-star reporters, who were asked about their favorite stories and biggest challenges. Many mentioned facing toxic comments on social media feeds, which is why we must have occasional in person, face to face, human interactions within our community to discuss serious topics with our collective well being on the line. While we go around meeting people in northern Nevada looking for stories and profiling those struggling and the do gooders, we believe it’s also important to meet those who believe in the value of what we are putting back into the community via social media, post by post, video by video, article by article. We encourage all to reach out and keep sharing their own stories, let us know what we should report about, to get to know each other better, to highlight what’s worthy, to raise awareness and flags, and to keep fighting to make northern Nevada a better place for all. https://lnkd.in/gTq9nmS8
