Investment in communities, before justice-system involvement, is community justice. Center for Justice Innovation Chief Innovation and Strategy Officer Julian Adler and Director of West Coast Initiatives Chidinma Ume argue that reformers—and their counterparts in government and philanthropy—must swim upstream toward the waters of community-led innovation to achieve lasting impact. ➡ Read more here: https://lnkd.in/egdFnHsw

🕊 World Day of Social Justice: Embracing Restorative Justice On this World Day of #SocialJustice, let us reflect on the transformative power of restorative justice in building equitable societies. 🌍 Restorative justice embodies the essence of social justice by prioritising healing, reconciliation, and the restoration of relationships over punitive measures. It recognises that justice is not merely about retribution, but about addressing the root causes of harm and fostering meaningful change within communities. 🤝 👉 Let's learn about the link between Restorative Justice and Social Justice through this newly released blog: https://lnkd.in/giQJZC7G 👉 Let's support the inclusion of restorative justice to the Victims and Prisoners Bill through the petition: https://chng.it/gBb84VDFKc

Restorative justice is an important pathway to healing. Please check out my blog below to learn more.
This is #LockedinSolidarity week, and Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) asked our CEO, Jamila Hodge, contribute a piece on restorative justice. This is just a part of what she had to say, so please read on: "90% of restorative justice participants report being satisfied by the process. That number far eclipses the satisfaction of those who relied on the criminal justice system" https://lnkd.in/eAEBFnCK

Founder & Executive Director, Zealous | Civil rights attorney. Longtime public defender. Fighting to topple the imbalance of power & voice in justice policy & media.
Proud to announce that my org Zealous--in partnership with John Legend & a range of national and local organizations--just publicly launched Gathering For Freedom, our ongoing effort to gather and share the true stories of bail reform, shared by real people who benefited from freedom from pretrial detention. Our hope is that overtime, these stories of everyday freedom and everyday people will help breathe life into the growing body of data you all know well proves bail reform’s success. Launch: Award winning artist and activist, John Legend, joined Jen Psaki on NBC to introduce the project and talk about the truth about pretrial justice. Background: Over the last year--in partnership with a range of local and national organizations in partnership with local and national organizations including the Texas Jail Project, Civil Rights Corps, JP, VOCAL-NY, the Boundless Freedom Project, The Ali Forney Center, First to Serve, Justice LA, Dignity and Power Now, Essie Justice Group, and The Bail Project---Zealous has been meeting people around the country experiencing pretrial freedom, who have been eager to share their stories. We've been able to get a good head start on a growing tapestry of original short videos, written testimonials and photography, online experiences, and other stories--anonymous and otherwise. But there is so much more work to be done. John Legend: As part of the evolving initiative, John Legend invited individuals who experienced both bail and pretrial freedom in New York, Los Angeles, and Houston, for a dinner and strategy session at his home. On Jen Psaki’s show on Sunday, Legend will premiere GatheringForFreedom.org which includes our new film made in partnership with MediaTank Productions & Free America of the experience and a public call for more stories of pretrial freedom from those who have experienced it. The Future: Over the next few weeks and months, we will be regularly launching and amplifying exciting new elements of the Freedom Stories project in collaboration with local and national partners across the country. Just next month, we'll be launching a project specifically focused on Harris County (Houston) Texas - so be on the lookout for more on that! Not Just Bail Reform: This initial launch and collection of stories is just one part of our broader effort to share compelling stories that show what the future of abundance looks like--i.e. public health and safety investments and interventions that work better, including affordable housing, sustainable energy, jobs, violence intervention, restorative justice, alternative first response, and more. We should talk about potential DPA issue partnerships!

YEAC-Nigeria’s 2023 Endeavor in Reinforcing Civic Spaces In a year marked by challenges and opportunities, the Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) embarked on a significant mission to bolster civic space and security in Nigeria’s South-South Region. This comprehensive narrative delves into YEAC-Nigeria’s initiatives throughout 2023, culminating in a pivotal Sensitization Workshop for Onelga Security Peace and Advisory Committee (OSPAC) Commanders on November 28. The Context: Upholding Civic Integrity in Adverse Times The civic environment in Rivers State and its surroundings has faced daunting challenges. The suppression of civic space by state and non-state actors had a pronounced impact on citizen participation, especially evident during the 2023 elections. The emergence of non-state policing entities such as OSPAC further complicated the scenario, often operating unchecked and leading to violations of community rights and freedoms. YEAC-Nigeria stepped into this complex landscape with a clear objective: to instill a culture of self-regulation within these entities, focusing particularly on OSPAC, to strike a balance between maintaining security and upholding civic freedoms. At CGLA, we provide legal and social work support to those that need it most. And while doing so, we recognize that a more just and equitable society must also be pursued on a greater scale. CGLA partners with our Leadership Council and other directly system-impacted persons, to ensure their voices are heard in the legislative process and at the front lines, advocating to remove barriers to economic opportunities, affordable housing, and family connections.
