Lunches during my PhD often involved engaging discussions, thanks to our then Jena School for Microbial Communication manager, Jan Buellesbach, and my colleague, Ramses Gallegos Monterrosa. On one particular day, as we strolled towards a city cafe, we found ourselves immersed in a discussion inspired by the article 'Can a biologist fix a radio?' This conversation prompted me to reflect on the shortcomings in the way we communicate biological sciences. Not much changed in the way I crafted my papers following this event (and there will be another article on why this was so); nevertheless, the discussion from that day has been etched in my thoughts forever. https://lnkd.in/eNFtYBPw The article talks about how a biologist approaches a problem. "How would we begin? First, we would secure funds to obtain a large supply of identical functioning radios in order to dissect and compare them to the ones that are broken. We would eventually find how to open the radios and will find objects of various shape, color, and size. We would describe and classify them into families according to their appearance," writes Yuri Lazebnik In doing all this, what is the probability that the radio will be fixed? The long-running problem with the way biological science is communicated is the lack of standard language. "Because the language is standard, any engineer trained in electronics would unambiguously understand a diagram describing the radio or any other electronic device." Unlike the fields of engineering and physical sciences, we biologists love to put forth a new concept. A similar protein discovered in another species gets a different name, and the same pathway in a related species is represented by a unique diagram. Rarely do we build upon core understandings. As the sciences become more interdisciplinary, with an increasing collaboration of #mathematicians and #datascientists joining forces to understand the intricacies of biological systems, a standard, and more qualitative language is surely evolving. What are some of the other faults you noticed in the ways we communicate biological research? Do comment. #sciencecommunication #biology
