Fabulous time interacting with some top professionals in the credit space, with insights from all across the spectrum. There's a lot of challenges facing UK companies (of course SME's), but the larger businesses are also facing a tough time getting renewals on working capital lines, as well as what seems like a lot of "funding mismatches" (viz long term debt for short term needs), and an increase in the demand for lenders to seek directors personal guarantees. Also, the landscape of providers continues to change with challenger and specialist banks account for a higher share (59%) of total gross lending than the big five banks (41%) for the third year in a row, £3.5 billion was lent to SMEs in Q4'23 (the first quarter not to see a fall since Q2 2022), about three quarters of SME's not informed about alternatives to core banking finance, and global supply chain finance at $2.3Trillion (+7% YoY). Interesting times to see who will step into what gaps to support UK SME plc.
