2023 was a transformative year for New York small businesses! Thanks to the SUNY/SBDC partnership, over 14,000 businesses across New York were assisted at SBDCs located on SUNY - The State University of New York campuses. This collaboration provided more than 63,000 hours of advisement, created or saved nearly 3,000 jobs, and injected over $222 million into New York's economy. The recently announced "strategic combination" of St. Ambrose University and Mount Mercy University has been in the works since initial conversations in January 2023, with a timeline spanning over 18 months. This development, subject to regulatory approval (potentially another 18 months or more), highlights the lengthy process involved in #mergersandacquisitions within #highereducation. #Collegesanduniversities must maintain sufficient cash flow for at least a three-year period to ensure there is enough runway to complete a transaction. A key aspect of this merger is the emphasis on preserving each institution's #legacy, a thoughtful approach that is commendable amidst the challenges posed by the #enrollmentcliff in the higher education sector. ‘The Effect of Postsecondary Educational Institutions on Local Economies: A Bird’s Eye View’, a recent NBER working paper, highlights the positive impact of educational expansion on driving regional growth. “We analyze the local economic effects of branch campus openings in Tennessee and Texas, two states representative of the underlying U.S. enrollment patterns...
