“I’ll just do it for 12 months,” I told myself. “And I’ll use that time to figure out what I really want for a career.” In August 2001, as a newly-minted college grad, I joined AmeriCorps. I landed in Orange County to spend a service year as a residential counselor with Boys Hope Girls Hope of Southern California. That year changed my life. I learned and felt so much from the girls I lived with and “parented” at Girls Hope. So much so, that I decided that mission-driven work would be my career. I spent 6 years in the nonprofit sector in Southern California and learned a TON. Then I went corporate, moving over to PIMCO to launch a global employee volunteer program and lead the PIMCO Foundation. During my 11+ years at PIMCO, I again learned a TON. These learning experiences enabled me to build Mission Up Consulting, where I shape CSR initiatives and community activation efforts that foster connection. I love consulting with philanthropic companies, corporate foundations, and community initiatives now. But my time with AmeriCorps was the catalyst for it all. Little did I know that my service year would make all the difference in my life. (And if I could get on my soapbox for a moment, I wish ALL colleges and universities would promote a service year much more than they do currently!) What's made the difference for you in your career? #volunteerism #corporategiving #CSR #socialimpact

A recent client is aiming for a managerial role. “I don’t have leadership experience. Do I have a shot?”, she fretted. Digging into her past, my team discovered something impressive. She had led 500+ fellow volunteers in a youth mentorship program across Latin America for 3 years. Her volunteering doesn’t only show her altruistic side. It also signals to potential employers her initiative and teamwork in diverse settings. Here’s a prime example of how volunteering can bridge skill gaps for your target role. In my case, after volunteering as a teacher in underserved communities, I learned how to coach people to their full potential. This most crucial skill defines my career to this day. If you are changing roles soon, consider strategically engaging in volunteer opportunities. Aside from the rewarding feeling you get, it can set you up for your next chapter. #CareerDevelopment #Volunteering #Resume #ResumeWriting #JobSearch

From Skeptic to Changemaker! 💭💁♀️ Remember those scoffs? "Why waste time volunteering? Just get paid!" they'd say. Back then, I didn't fully understand the value beyond the lines on my resume. It was 2022, an interview day for the AFS Global STEM Academies. "Volunteer again after that trip?"🤔 I scoffed internally. "Been there, done that!" Little did I know, I was about to be schooled. Here's the thing: volunteering isn't a resume booster; it's a life hack. Everyone should embrace it, not just for the experience but for how it transforms you. The beauty of volunteering? It's tailor-made! Interests, skills, even just a desire to make a difference – there's something for everyone. There is no need to join an organization; even small personal initiatives can spark change. For me, volunteering unlocked a world of connection I never knew existed. The friendships, the stories, the impact – that's where the real happiness lies. Seeing smiles and witnessing positive change – that's a high no paycheck can buy. Being a global changemaker and contributing to a sustainable future is not just something we do; it's who we are. The truth is, you need this more than the world does. Ask yourself: how can I help others, my community, the planet? What impact do I want to leave? What values do I want to champion? Remember, "Be what you needed when you were younger." 🌎💫 Thank you for reminding me that happiness isn't found, it's created, #AFS_Intercultural_Programs, and countless others working for a better world. #volunteering #changemakers #sustainability #SDGs #AFS_Affect #connections #charities #happiness #selfimprovement #life #values #worldwide #call_for_change

This initiative enhances access to quality outdoor spaces for all young people, promoting physical health and mental well-being, offers educational opportunities in sustainability and climate resilience, encourages youth participation in community planning and advocacy, and creates inclusive spaces for young people to express themselves and engage with their community, enhancing social cohesion. The project will impact 300-500 youth. Here are some quick facts about Sam: 🌆 Hometown: Brooklyn, NY 📍 Placement Location: Canarsie, BK 🎓 Education: Rising senior at the University at Buffalo majoring in Sociology and minoring in Philosophy, Politics & Economics (PPE) with focuses in urban sociology, criminal justice, and educational inequality. 🏞️ Hobbies: Reading, writing, learning history, listening to music, and playing basketball (and constantly stressing about the state of the NY Knicks). 💖 Personal Mission Statement: To utilize my unique past experiences, skills, and knowledge to foster meaningful relationships, uplift those around me, and assist communities that have been historically disadvantaged. 🌟 Personal Mantra: Let’s get this done... Social Developer| Digital Media Strategist| Advocate for Equitable Education| Passionate About Technology and Community Empowerment| Visual Artist | Web 3 Educator | Entrepreneur
Sometime ago, I stood in a makeshift classroom, chalk in hand. The eager faces of children stared back at me, their eyes reflecting hope. I wasn’t a teacher by profession, but there I was-a volunteer. Little did I know that this uncharted path would shape my story. Now, as a Communications officer at Bramble Network-an NGO democratizing access to quality education for young people in rural African communities-I see the impact of those early seeds sown. Volunteering is like stepping into a dense forest without a map. You’re guided by passion, not paychecks. As a teenager, I joined the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and it gifted me the richest experiences of my youth. I organized events, painted murals, and mentored young people. Each act was a seed planted-a tiny bud waiting to bloom. And bloom they did. Those impact projects we admire? They didn’t spring up overnight. The conveners had sown seeds years ago. They volunteered at local shelters, cleaned up beaches, taught computer skills, and engaged in activities most people wouldn’t consider glamorous. Their hearts aligned with purpose, and that clarity fueled their vision for impact, multiplying and spreading to communities. Want to emulate someone’s success? Rewind their story. Look back 5 or 10 years. You’ll find them volunteering, learning, and building connections. They were preparing for greatness because their hearts aligned with purpose. Take Tunde Onakoya, for instance. His recent feat was only possible because he consistently gave his time, resources, and attention to his passion, whether paid or not. Whether you’re a retiree teaching literacy or a student organizing eco-drives, your impact will one day resonate globally if you keep putting your best foot forward. The simple takeaway? Embrace the uncharted path. Plant seeds. Water them. Watch your impact bloom. The video in this post captures my collaboration as a volunteer artist exploring healing through art at the University College Hospital (UCH) during the Global Arts in Medicine Fellowship. Many thanks to Dr. Mary Owojuyigbe for inviting me into this transformative opportunity. Fact is, I’m a proud serial volunteer, and I eagerly anticipate creating even greater platforms for development. #healingthroughart #volunteering #socialdevelopment
